***If you’re anything like me, one of your favorite reasons to read is for the story. Not for the character development and interaction. Not because of the descriptive, emotive powers of the writer. Not because of deep, literary meaning hidden beneath layers of metaphor. (Even though those are all good things.) No … it’s because you want to know what happens next?
Or, um, is it just me?

Why do we read? I’d have to say my main reason to read is to get away from work, life and whatever else may be going on and even just to relax and enjoy myself. A book gives us the power to get away to another world and I love that.

I do read mostly for a story and the meaning behind that story. I like a story that hits me emotionally and stays with me for a long time. I also like the series I follow-Betsy from the Undead series, Stephanie Plum from Janet Evanovich, the Pretty Little Liars series. These books make me feel comfortable, like I’m fitting into an old shoe.

So, I read for various reasons. What about all of you?

I’ve always loved reading but I’m not sure that I can pinpoint even a few reasons why I enjoy it so much. It is a type of escape, like you mentioned, but it also provides a fulfillment that I don’t get from other mediums.

I totally know what you mean about characters in old series, such as Stephanie Plum, making you feel comfortable. I feel the exact same way!

I love to read. It can be an escape, a learning experience, an emotional outlet. I think the main reason I read (and don’t listen usually) is because I can use my imagination to form the characters, to an extent – how they look, how they sound when speaking.

I finished analyzing books in college. That said, I won’t waste my time on a thin plot. I’ve been known to stop reading and walk a pb to the paper recycling bag! I suppose, in a small way, blogging about books is a form of analyzing. A very small way for me because my reviews are very short. I’m always afraid I’ll say too much.

I read for various reasons too. It doesn’t just have to be about the story.

Trish, a good book for me is much better than television or even a movie.

Swapna, I love those comfy characters! You feel like they’ve become a part of the family you know them so well. lol.

Mary, you can never say too much in a review. You should if you want to-I’d love to read more of your thoughts. I agree on reading instead of audio. I like listening to audio at night when I go to sleep (can’t sleep if it’s too quiet) and I enjoy it then. I listen in the car and when I worked in the office I used to also but I prefer the good old book like you.
