The Boston Bibliophile asks:
What’s your favorite bookstore? Is it an online store or a bricks-and-mortar store? How often do you go book shopping? Is your favorite bookstore(or bookstores) listed as a favorite in LT? Do you attend events at local bookstores? Do you use LT to find events?
Well my favorite bookstore is called Chapters. However, I mostly buy my books online now from Chapters as it’s cheaper for me. I do go once in a while just to browse around with a friend but generally if I want to hang out with books I head over to my neighborhood library and grab one of the comfy chairs there to read for a bit.
Unfortunately I go book shopping much more often than I should. There are stacks of books I’m pretty sure I’ll never get to in my lifetime so I need to really buckle down and quit buying. Of course that will be after today when I order my new John Saul novel. lol.
Chapters is not listed in LT. Chapters does have author events and parties when a big novel is coming out like Harry Potter or Breaking Dawn. I’ve never gone as I’m not one for the huge, screaming crowds but apparantely they’re a great success.
So, how about you? Do you have a favorite bookstore or do you buy your books online mostly?
I love to shop for books, but I don’t like to spend non-browsing time there. Give me a library to read in any day.
I live in kind of a small town and we don't have a lot to choose from in the way of book stores. We have Barnes & Noble and BooksAMillion and I prefer the latter. It's much easir to find stuff there. I do most of my book shopping online due to the fact I don't drive anymore. Amazon has been fantastic. And they have good deals, too. But I'm going to check out Chapters. I've never hear of it. Cute name, too. 🙂
Oh Dar–I know what you mean about the stacks of books! I’ve come into so many books in the last month just here and there (mostly at a cheap library sale) that I don’t really know what to do with them. My favorite bookstore is Half Price Books (used books chain store). Unfortunately we don’t have a lot of really great community bookstores–mostly just the big chains.
Jennifer, I love libraries-the whole atmosphere is just calming to me.
Lisa, Chapters is in Canada so not sure if they’d be any good to you. I like online shopping just because it is so much cheaper. We have a lot of book stores here. I only visit the ones closest to me though.
Trish, we’re the same here-big chain bookstores. We used to have a lot of smaller ones but they’ve closed up over the years-they can’t compete with those big guys.
I’m mostly an Amazon shopper. Now with the ban on book spending…there ‘ll be only memories…sniff.
I pretty much grew up in a library but, lately, go to bookstores more. Kind of stupid, really! But, at a bookstore I generally can get what I want when I want it and not have to put my name on a waiting list.
In the summer, when we are at camp, I love going to Borders and a small privatly-owned one in Saco, Maine called Nonesuch Bookstore. They have a great “Our Staff Recommends” section.
In the winter, we have a small one called Wonderland Bookstore in a nearby town but nothing where we live except Walmart. Sad!
Linda, I agree. That’s the one thing about the library that irritates me is that it takes so long to get the newer books. In my library they stay on order long after they’ve already been published and then you have to sit on the waiting list for who knows how long. So, that’s why I end up buying quite a few books. But for just sitting and relaxing to read a bit, I still love my little library for that.
J.Kaye, I almost missed that comment of yours. Too funny-with your book ban and only your memories of spending…I really need to take after you and do the same thing!
