Musing Mondays (Oct. 13)

October 13, 2008 by Darlene

Todays Musing Mondays asks us…

Could you narrow down your reading to a favorite genre and author? Why, or why not?

Absolutely not! I do have favorite authors but I could never just read their books and no others. As for genres, there are just so many good books waiting to be read that to read one would be terrible. I love to have a mix of things and am willing to try something I normally wouldn’t ( except for—I don’t read self-help and such) but as for fiction-I love it and will continue to read whichever one takes my fancy.

How about you—can you narrow it down to only one genre and author. Why or why not? Let me know what you think…

Nope just can’t do it for an author or a genre.

Great question. I love a novel with a good plot. I don’t read many mysteries or legal thrillers and, like you, I stay away from the self-help books. I’ve been reading a few classics each year – some I read in high school but didn’t enjoy at that time.

I could never narrow my reading selections to one genre or author. I have so many favorite authors and genres. I like most types of books except the self-help type. I’m more into stories, mysteries, historical fiction, etc.

I would say literary fiction is my favorite genre with historical fiction running a close second.

I like to mix it up, though. I’d be happy if 75% of my reading came from the genres above with the other 25% a mix of memoir/biography/autobiography, contemporary fiction, suspense, etc.

Favorite authors? That is more difficult. I have a handful that I will read everything they write as soon as it comes out though.

wow!! u sound so like what I think 🙂 It is pretty difficult for me to chose any genre as such!!

I like to read different – different stuff.. and mix it up a bit 🙂

Haha! Great answer Dar (I love the “absolutely not!”). I have my favorite authors as well but I try not to read too many of their books each year partly so I can savor them but also that I can read across the lines that you talk about doing.

I have my favorites (genre and author), but I couldn’t limit it to one. The good news is that reading other genres and authors has made me more appreciative of my favorites; however, the bad news is that by reading others, my taste has broadened and I don’t get to my favorites as much I used to. The TBR pile and list is overwhelming!

Yasmin, I’m with you on that one but you already knew that from my visit to your blog. lol.

Mary, a good plot is definitely important. If it’s not there, even if you like a character, it’s still not interesting. I’m reading one like that now.

Sherri, I think most are like us. I just think there is too many good books to narrow it down. I love historical fiction-just brings the past to life and I love it.

    J.Kaye 🙂

Shana, you read across a big range. Truthfully I don’t mind memoirs if they’re done well. I’m like you with favorite authors. The ones I do have I read their books right away.

Veens-that’s what makes reading so exciting isn’t it-all these different places we get to go to.

    guatami tripathy 🙂

Trish, I’m still bad if I find an author I like now I want to read all of their books but have to control myself and space them out like you say otherwise I would never read anything else either.

Joy, my tbr list and pile is so huge now and the worst part is I don’t know if I’ll ever get to the ones I had on the shelf before I started putting all the new ones there.

Hi Dar.. I would ditto your comment. Nope … can’t really choose. I do go in phases… I like fiction. I like books about twins, sisters, best friends, mother and daughter relationships. Next to that I love Historical fiction because it provides a way for me to refresh my mind on history while adding some fun to it.

I like to mix it up.. a little current stuff, a little classical, Pulizter Prize, and then some easy reading (chic lit) too.

I don’t typically read sci-fi, fantasy, or adventure/western type books. But based on a good recommendation I will give most anything a shot.

Toni, you read a wide range of things. I think a little more than me because you will read self help and you like classics. lol. That’s what I love about historical fiction too-a fun way to learn something.

I think I can still narrow it down to a few favourite authors, but it’s getting harder and harder as I discover great new ones!

And self-help books and I don’t get along either 😛
