Musing Mondays is hosted by Rebecca at Just One More Page. This week’s question asks us…
With the holiday season now upon us, how does it affect your reading? Do you have more, or less, time to read at Christmas? Do you read Christmas themed/related books?
My answer…
- For me it seems I have less time to read. The tree needs to go up and so do the decorations and it seems reading is being pushed to the side a bit. Oh, and let’s not forget the shopping that still needs to be done as some of us haven’t started at all yet. I don’t necessarily read Christmas themed books but I would if I had any. I’ve got one Christmas cookbook to be reviewed soon so that may be the only one this season. I have to say though I’ve read many reviews of some really good Christmas books out there which I sure would have liked to have read.
So, how about you-do you read more or less around Christmas? Do you make a point of reading Christmas related books or just go on with your normal reading?
Hi Dar, I have less time to read too. I’m too busy with holiday stuff like decorating, cooking and shopping 🙂

I tend to read about the same amount but I do read Christmas themed books mixed with others from my TBR stack. I find that reading a good book calms me in a wonderful, though sometimes hectic, time of year. So I make time for the reading : )
I have less time to read, too, but then I get great books for Christmas and my January starts off great.
Well, less time for sure. I’m trying to get ahead so I can sit by the tree and read. I always try to read some holiday books – always the new Anne Perry Christmas book.
I’m hoping to stay with my normal reading pace, since I don’t have too many Christmas things to do…we use the same live tree every year, and it’s only about 2 feet tall, so decorating is easy. 🙂
I usually have more time to read around the holidays even before I started school this year. I love to read holiday theme books. I’m saving the two I won at Holly’s blog for Christmas week.
Uhhh, a holiday cookbook. Good luck trying the recipes!
I think I read less, too, unless we’re traveling – which we’re not this year. I’m hosting Christmas for the in-laws so that will take quite a bit of my time and attention for a few days.
How does Buddy like the tree?

I do most of my reading on my commute to and from work. I don’t normally have time to read at home, especially on the weekends when I finally have a moment to spend time with my daughter that doesn’t involve helping her with school stuff. So Christmas doesn’t affect my reading too much. It did in the sense that I wanted to finish a lot of books on my Thanksgiving vacation, but I spent two days hauling Christmas decorations out of my closet, putting up the tree, and setting up my Christmas village.
As for Christmas books, I don’t usually read them, but this year I have The Paper Bag Christmas that I hope to start and finish before the holiday!

Diary of an Eccentric
I guess my available reading time depends on how wrapped up I am in the Holiday Season. I do like to read at least one Christmas book. My book club has been selecting Christmas novels in December the last couple of years and that has been nice. This month we are reading Finding Noel so I am looking forward to that.
Naida, I think for the most part Christmas is too busy to do our normal reading although it’s nice to relax with a book after everything else.
Mary, lol-I just mentioned that relaxing part in my comment above. I did notice you’ve been reading Christmas themed books. I should too-it probably goes a long way to putting you in the season more I imagine.
Karen, my favorite Christmas gift-even more books. lol. Perfect way to start the New Year.
Luanne, I love turning on the tree lights and relaxing with some hot chocolate and a book too.
Jill, yup a 2 ft tree would be easy to decorate. Unfortunately for me ours is 6 ft and a bugger to decorate. lol.
Bree, you won those Father Christmas books, didn’t you? Those will be great to read for Christmas.
Shana, you’re going to be very busy during Christmas. Buddy doesn’t do much with the tree other than nosing a few ornaments here and there. lol.
Anna, I used to listen to audio books all the time on my way to work. Setting up the Christmas stuff takes a while-it’s amazing how fast a day can go doing that.
Jo-Jo, I got a Christmas book in the mail today that I’m going to read so I guess I’ll have a few holiday’ish ones. I’ve heard Finding Noel is good. I’ll be watching for your review.
Unfortunately I have less time to read as well (and my blogging takes the biggest hit). This is one of our busiest months at work, so my lunch and morning reading time is completely cut–a lot of days that’s the only time I can read. 🙁 3 days in an my reader is already going crazy. Eeeks!
Trish, I know I miss you on the blogs but I know how things get busy sometimes. It sure doesn’t take long for the reader to fill up. When that happens I read what I can and oh well for the rest. Just do what you can right now.
