Chunkster Challenge 2009

January 6, 2009 by Darlene

Ok folks, I have truly lost my mind and very likely need some serious help but I’m joining the Chunkster Challenge over at So Many Books, So Little Time of which you can read more about and join in here. I wanted to join last year but was too late so here I am this year instead. The thing is these chunksters of mine are also on my ARC list, Read Your Own Books List, War Challenge, and the Outlander Challenge List so this is perfect. They also count towards my 100+ books this year challenge so that makes it not quite so insane right. LOL.

The rules are as follows:

*A chunkster is 450 pages or more of ADULT literature (fiction or nonfiction) Don’t complain folks, I read all thousands of pages of the Twilight series and they were good, but not a challenge. A chunkster should be a challenge.
*If you read large type books your book will need to be 525 pages or more I asked around and the average LT book is 10-15% longer or more so I think that was a fair estimate.
*No Audio books in the chunkster. It just doesn’t seem right. Words on paper for this one folks.
* You may start any time after signing up. You must complete your reads before or on Nov 15th.
*Short Stories and Essay collections will not be counted.
*Books may crossover with other challenges (see option 4 for a collaborative effort with TBR challenge)
*Only option 4 requires that you make a set list of books to complete the challenge

Those are the basics. Here are your options:
*The Chubby Chunkster – this option is for the reader who has a large tome or two to read, but really doesn’t want to commit to more than that. 2 books is all you need to finish this challenge.

*Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big? – this option is for the slightly heavier reader who wants to commit to 3-5 Chunksters over the next ten months.

*Mor-book-ly Obese – This is for the truly out of control chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to 6 or more chunksters OR three tomes of 750 pages or more. You know you want to…..go on and give in to your cravings.

And lastly, in an intriguing collaboration with the wildly popular Miz B of the TBR Challenge we have:

*Too Big To Ignore Anymore – this option is for those chunksters on your TBR list. You may select any number of books over 450 pages but you must LIST THEM to complete the challenge and they must be on your TBR list as well (honor code folk, I don’t have time to be the challenge police)

So, I am taking on the Mor-book-ly-Obese Challenge because I am obviously out of control. Here are my choices-they cross over with my other challenges too so there is no excuse not to get them read…

  • The Glass of Time by Michael Cox (527 pgs)
  • Annette Valon by James Tipton (481 pgs)
  • The Conqueror by Georgette Heyer (460 pgs)
  • Sophie’s Choice by William Styron (626 pgs)
  • The Book Thief by Makus Zusak (550 pgs)
  • The Winds of War by Herman Zouk (885 pgs)
  • War and Remembrance by Herman Zouk (1039 pgs)
  • Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (850 pgs)
  • Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon (947 pgs)
  • Voyager by Diana Gabaldon (1059 pgs)
  • Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon (1070 pgs)
  • The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon (979 pgs)
  • A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon)

Well now, seeing that down on the screen really makes it a tad scary, doesn’t it? LOL. Ok, wish me luck…

Good luck!! 🙂 One of my goals is to read a few longer books this year, since they scare me to death, so I’ll probably join as well. I’ve heard really great things about Outlander series…hope you like it!

Wowie, wow, wow! I don’t know how you manage to get in all the reading that you do, Dar! One look at your chunkster list and page #’s and my jaw dropped open, 😮 lol.

Trish, I have a tendency to push those bigger ones to the back but all of these are in my other challenges so I might as well tackle them. I’m looking forward to getting back to teh Outlander series.

Wanda, I do read fast. I’ve always been able to do that. However, my jaw dropped when I saw how many chunksters I had on my other challenges that fit in perfectly for this one.

Kathy, I’m going to need it. lol.

This is tempting but I’m not going to join… I don’t think I’d be able to complete it anyway. Good luck with the challenge! I’m sure you could make it! 🙂

    Hello Dar.
This is a great idea!. I find that I love chunks! If they are great I hate it when I have no more to read!

I am new to your blog and I found it a great place to visit. I would like to invite you for a visit at my place. I love new connections and links with readers!

Linda, that’s what I like about chunksters. You get to spend more time with the people you like in the book. Thanks for visiting my blog, I hope you do come again. I’ll have to pop over and visit yours.
