Musing Mondays (Jan. 19)

January 19, 2009 by Darlene

Musing Mondays is about reading while sick…

How does your being sick (or injured) affect your reading? Do you read more? Less? Do you pick out a different book than you had already planned? Do you have a “comfort book” that makes you feel better?

  • For me it depends on how sick I am and what it is I have. If I’m just feeling flu’ish I can still read but if, for example, I have an incident like where I cut my cornea in my eye, I couldn’t read. If I’m really sick then no, normally I read less because I can’t concentrate. If I can read I will normally pick up something lighter so it requires less concentration but no, I don’t have any comfort books. Or wait, maybe I do, I consider my Harry Potter books comfort reads so I could see myself heading for those in bad times.

How about you, does being sick or injured affect your reading? Do you have comfort book you turn to in those times?

I’m like you – it depends on how sick I am. If I’m really sick, all I want to do is lay in bed and try to sleep.

I can usually read when I am sick, but I sleep for intervals inbetween. I had to have an operation on my stomach last year and I had two weeks of recuperation. That really helped to get my reading on a roll. If I feel I need comfort books, it would previously have been the Harry Potter books, but now I would definitely go for the Twilight series. They are my new comfort books.

I sleep a lot when i’m sick, but i’m not at work so all in all I probably read more. I often go for things i’ve read before though as I don’t really take it in.

If I’m really sick I usually fall asleep with Little House on the Prairie playing on tv! lol

Harry Potter is definitely comfort reading for me too. But I also can’t read at all if I’m feeling very sick.

    Well… This question is timely!
Since I am injured with a broken wrist I am not able to knit. So all my time goes for reading.

If I’m injured then yes, I can read but if I am sick at all then no. Usually it’s a headache or some sort of sinus thing and keeping my head up to read would not be comfortable.

I can only recall one time in my life where I was real sick for about a week or ten days, and SO sick that I could not read.
Most other times, I still like to read, even when ill. I LOVE missing work…… so I can read. To me, the best reason to call the boss and put on my “coughing” voice is when I have a great book I want to spend the day with!
However, all of this is not the reason I originally came here to comment on your blog. The real reason is because I had happened upon your profile and saw that you said you love all kinds of music “except rap” and I had a good laugh!
I am exactly the same way! I find that as my mood changes, so does my selection of music, everything from heavy metal, classic rock, country, orchestral, pop [even Madonna], and even “girl” music, like The Corrs and stuff…. I have all of these moods… but never yet in my lifetime have I been in a “rap” mood!
    THANKS FOR THE LAUGH!

I am feeling abnormal–it seems everyone I have visited has mentioned returning to comfort reads and I don’t have any! I guess I really don’t like to re-read!
    Happy Monday…

I reach for the comfort books as well, but sometimes when I’m sick I opt for a movie I’ve seen a million times rather than a book. I think that’s the only time I’d rather watch TV than read!

I’m the same way. If I am too sick, I most likely won’t be able to read at all.

I feel the same way too, Dar. 🙂

It really does depend on how sick I am. I can’t concentrate much when I’m ill as well…injured of course is a different story!

Thanks all for your comments. It’s interesting to read whether others like to read while sick or not.

Jo-Jo, I love Little House too. I should get it on DVD because that would be a good thing to watch while sick. Like Trish, I also grab a movie to watch except it’s normally Harry Potter too.

Wendy, I hope that wrist is feeling better.

Cip, thanks for popping by. I hope you do again. My music changes with my mood too. I’m glad you got a laugh out of my not liking rap. I didn’t even realize that was still on there. lol.

Ti, I can’t read with a headache either. It’s funny but I don’t consider a headache being sick and I should since I get so many of them.
