Today’s Musing Mondays hosted by Rebecca at Just One More Page is about bookstores…
How do you choose what do buy from your local bookstore? Do you have a list, or just browse? What is the selection in your book store like? Do you find what you’re looking for? Do you feel pressured to buy the kind of books the store makes prominent? (question courtesy of MizB)
- If I go to the mall, I go to the bookstore—no way I can not visit a bookstore if I know it’s there. I’m there to browse and see what tickles my fancy. Mostly I just look around and see if any book covers attract my attention and I pull those off the shelf for a look-see. I always check out the new releases and the discount displays. I very seldom take a list to the bookstore as most of my book buying is done online now with it being so much cheaper. The selection in my bookstore is not bad but usually again I end up buying online because they won’t carry what I’m specifically looking for. The bookstore I shop in is a smaller one that’s a part of the bigger chains. It’s supposed to be closing sometime this year(and I’m going to miss them) so they don’t always have as good of a selection as the bigger Chapters stores do. In answer to the last part, I never feel pressured to buy what they make prominent unless I really want it.
How about you—how do you choose what to buy from your local bookstore? Do you like browsing or do you go armed with a list? Share your thoughts.
I can never pass up a bookstore either:)Sorry your store is closing. Seems to be happening more often these days.
Sorry to hear the store is closing. Is Chapters a Canadian store? I’m not familiar with it.
I like stores where the clerks label their favorites. There’s a store in my area where they do that. They place a tag on the shelf below the favorite book and tell why they like it in a couple of sentences.
I love going to the bookstore. I always check out the discount displays. I do shop online too for better selection and prices.

I usually have a list but I like to also browse before I commit myself to my list
No way I can not visit a bookstore if I see one either! Even if I don’t have any books to buy on mind, I’d still step in and have a look! What’s more, you never expect what you’ll find on those new releases shelves, right?
And yes, I love shopping online too if the books I want are hard to find in bookstores, or if they’ve promotions!
The nearest bookstore for me is an hour away (Barnes and Noble) so I don’t get there but once a month. I do most of my book shopping online through Amazon, but I love to just browse when I go to Barnes and usually go away with an armful of books for the kids and one or two for myself – whatever happens to catch my eye or if there are some goodies on sale.
A lot of bookstores are closing lately. Two just closed in my home town. I hate to say it but it is kinda Amazons fault. They are just so convenient.
I went into town today intending to go to the library to check out the audiobooks. But the library was closed. So I went to B&N without a list or even any intent to buy anything. I left with four books and two audiobooks. I have no will power.
I go with a list and end up browsing.
Lately I usually go with a list–and I’ve been trying my best to buy used. Sometimes I can’t resist, but I try to remind myself of the countless books I already own. The rule of thumb I’m *trying* to use this year is unless I plan on reading the book right away (usually for book club) it needs to stay in the store. 🙁 So painful!!! I know you understand. 😉
Thanks everyone for stopping by my Musing Mondays…
Mary, yes Chapters is a Canadian bookstore online and in big chain stores. We also have Amazon online here.
Jill, that’s hilarious. Quite the load of books and audios you went home with. lol.
Trish, I do understand. Unfortunately I haven’t progressed to that state yet. I’m still in the ‘let’s buy the books and put them on the shelves with the rest.’ Uggggggggggggh. lol.
I buy a lot more of my books online these days too, but I still love to visit the bookstores in town. Sometimes delayed gratification (waiting for the mail to arrive) just isn’t in the cards for me. 🙂 Great response!
