Book Review: In Over Her Head by Judi Fennell

June 3, 2009 by Darlene

In Over Her Head by Judi Fennell is over the top! I’ve never read anything like it and I really enjoyed it. This is a hilarious romantic comedy. I found myself laughing out loud so many times at the antics and conversations happening in this novel. This book really reminds me of a retelling of The Little Mermaid, adult style.

This book is about Erica who had a scary experience as a young girl that has kept her out of the ocean since. However she also has a mean ex-boyfriend who has her diving in the water to find him some diamonds. She’s not doing so good at getting him what he wants so he shoots her and takes off. She’s pretty much in la-la land when she’s whisked off and big-timed kissed by a stranger who just happens to be a Mer man who lives in the sea. Yes, I had never heard of one of those yet either. Really there is a lot I’ve never heard of before in this book which made it even funnier to me.

So Erica wakes up and meets the very gorgeous and very naked Reel. She’s shocked to discover she’s breathing underwater and even more shocked by the whole world that exists there. Reel has saved her life and no matter how hard she tries, she can’t keep her eyes off him. As for Reel, well he has been in love with Erica for many years so he’s pretty much in his glory. What follows is a rip-roaring underwater adventure full of zany characters, a little suspense and a lot of laughs.

Here’s a look into Erica’s world that had me liking her right off…

  • ‘And the hallucinations weren’t all that bad. Water-breathing lungs, so what? They were doable. Talking starfish, glowing fish lamps? Odd, but interesting.’ (p 29)

Oh and yes there is a bit of hanky-panky going on and plenty of innuendo too. One thing I found particularly amusing that I have to mention is the term used for breasts—shell-fillers. That just hit me the right way and had me laughing each time I saw it.

If you’re looking for a light and fun summer read for the beach, then this would be it! You don’t have to concentrate or try to pick apart the storyline, you just have to sit back, relax and enjoy!

This is the first novel in the Tritone Trilogy. Still to follow are Wild Blue Under and Catch of a Lifetime so there is more Erica and Reel to come! Be sure to pop by Judi Fennell’s website here and her blog here. You can buy In Over Her Head here in the US and here in Canada.

Also, pop back over to Peeking Between the Pages tomorrow when Judi stops by with a guest post and just maybe a copy of her book! Many thanks to Danielle at Sourcebooks for this fun read and also to Sourcebooks for this great cover! Wowsa!

I'm going to have to remember that term, next time I hear a derogatory one! No! Not gazongas. Shell-fillers! This one sounds like it would give you a nice break from reality!

Glad you guys enjoyed the term! There are a few others in the book – their language has to make sense to them. I mean, are they going to say, between a rock and a hard place? Possibly. But I like what I came up with for them (you'll have to read the book to find out!)

    Thanks again!

Judi, thanks so much for stopping by. I can't wait to see what's in store for Erica and Reel next!

Joanne, you know I don't normally pick up books with covers like this thinking they'll be sappy romance but this wasn't so I was pleasantly surprised.

Susie, it's nice to just have a fun read once in a while especially with some of the other stuff I read.

Kelly, thanks for the compliment on the new pic.

Sandy, Toni, this was definitely a break from reality! lol. I still crack up every time I see shell-fillers.

Everyone else, thanks for stopping by and commenting on my review. If you get a chance to read the book, please pop back and let me know. I'd love to know your thoughts on it.
