Moby Dick Mondays

November 16, 2009 by Darlene

Moby Dick Mondays is the brainchild of Ti from Book Chatter. You know there are just some books you’ve been meaning to read all your life or you’ve started them a few times and put them down – well this is what this is all about. I have always wanted to say that I’ve read Moby Dick among a few other books so I’m going to start with this one.

Joining Ti so far other than me is ..

Jill/Softdrink over at Fizzy Thoughts
Jill over at RhapsodyinBooks
Claire over at kiss a cloud (she will be joining us in 2010)
My good friend Toni from A Circle of Books

Some are reading and some are listening to the audio. I downloaded a 99 cent version onto my eReader this morning so that’s pretty good. Today is the start date so I’ll be reading my 4 pages tonight. If you’d like to join in with us, please do! You can take a look at Ti’s original post here.

Wish me luck! If I can make it through this I’d love to tackle War and Peace next.

As an English teacher, I'm embarrassed to say that I've never read Moby Dick. My department head absolutely loves it and could spend a whole semester teaching it. I'll be interested to read how you like it!

As for War and Peace I bought it when I was a freshman in high school and read it but have no idea what it was about! Maybe some day I'll tackle it again.

Like Linda, I am also an English teacher who has never read Moby Dick and many other of the classic staples. This sounds like a great idea!

Best of luck finishing the book!

I remember reading the beginning of this book in my junior or something year of high school. I switched classes, I think, so I never finished reading it. But I do remember that it was interesting! I think I liked the tone of the book the best.

    Good luck, Dar!
I read it once but did not finish; I don't think I've the interest to read it again, but well who knows?! ;P

I'm glad I stumbled into this Blog. I've read Moby Dick at least 30 times, have taught it in my English classes for over 26 years, and am still trying to figure it out! Good luck to you all!

As I told Ti, I admire you guys, but I'll do it from afar! No way am I taking on that whale. I started it once. I think I got as far as "Call me Ishmael." I did read and enjoy IN THE HEART OF THE SEA about the whaleship Essex and would even read it again. If you haven't read it, you might want to consider it as a read along with ole Moby.
Hope you have fun with this one, Dar!

I've never read Moby Dick either. I'll cheer you all on!
I think the classic book I couldn't read was Tom Sawyer. I just couldn't get into it. I got ruined on Mark Twain tho with some short story he wrote that was in a book of dog stories.

Congrats on your e-reader! Is it hard to hold to read? Does it store all the books at one time? Sounds cool!
    Have fun with the whale!

I've read them both and while I enjoyed Moby Dick, I *loved* War & Peace. Good luck with them both!

This sounds like a very interesting challenge, and there are tons of books that I could read for it. Thanks for bringing this challenge to my attention!

Dar, this sounds like a great proposition! But hmm! Lemme think 😉 Maybe I could chim in! 4 pages are not that bad..but I remember Jill saying she slept off at the 4th 😀 So I am wondering, if it really is good to go!

This is a great challenge. I don't know if I will officially join in, but I decided to read the first book of "Remembrance of Things Past", which is titled "Swann's Way", written by Marcel Proust.
I have started reading it and the author is so gifted with words, they flow like a silver stream off of the page.

All you guys must have a lot more patience than me! I tried several times over the years to read Moby Dick and I just couldn't make myself read (and at one time even listen to) more than a few pages.

Just coming up for air now. Been swamped at work. I am so glad that you are joining us.

Dare I say it? I am liking it more this time around and remember, this is like my 8th time trying to read it.

I think it's all of you that are making it better this time around.

I can't wait to hear what you ladies think of this. I've never had the courage to give it a go!

Good luck with this one Dar.

I read it in 10 grade and hated it. I think mostly because of the whale killing. I have no desire to read it again.
