Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.
My pick may seem strange to some but it’s for a book called Dirty Little Secrets by CJ Omololu to be released February 2/10 by Walker Books for Young Readers. It’s classed as a Young Adult book. Here’s a bit about it from Fantastic Fiction…
Everyone has a secret. But Lucy’s is bigger and dirtier than most. It’s one she’s been hiding for years – that her mom’s out-of-control hoarding has turned their lives into a world of garbage and shame. She’s managed to keep her home life hidden from her best friend and her crush, knowing they’d be disgusted by the truth. So, when her mom dies suddenly in their home, Lucy hesitates to call 911 because revealing their way of life would make her future unbearable – and she begins her two-day plan to set her life right.
With details that are as fascinating as they are disturbing, C. J. Omololu weaves an hour-by-hour account of Lucy’s desperate attempt at normalcy. Her fear and isolation are palpable as readers are pulled down a path from which there is no return, and the impact of hoarding on one teen’s life will have readers completely hooked.
Without fail I watch the tv show Hoarders every Monday night. I’m at once horrified and fascinated by the lives these people have. For those who don’t have a hoarding problem it seems hard to believe how much stuff some people can accumulate but I can only imagine how horrible it is for those that live it. That’s why the premise of this book fascinates me. I think it would be really interesting to read about it from a teenager’s point of view.
How about you, what are you waiting for this week?
I've never even heard of the show Hoarders. The book sounds fascinating.
I've seen this book AND I watch Hoarders too! I'm adding this to my wish list – good pick!
This does sound like a good one Dar. I don't watch Hoarders, but we have a very close friend that has that problem, and I really do believe it's a sickness. We actually had to go through all of her stuff last year when she was put in a nursing home and it was a nightmare!
That does sound like a good book, Dar. I have never heard of that TV show either. What network is it on?
I think this sounds good. I have never seen or heard of Hoarders but I have seen shows that feature them. It fascinates me… I'd read this one.
I'm waiting on this one as well. I had a friend whose mom was a hoarder, nothing as bad as the shows though.
Your book sounds great!
I am still waiting for two books I ordered from England long before Christmas – but the poor postwoman may be excused these days as we have one meter snow in the yard and the drive 😀
I'm addicted to the A&E show Hoarders, so this book sounds like a great one to read!!!
As another viewer of Hoarders…yes a show that is fascinating and very disturbing, this books sounds very interesting.
I actually vaguely know a woman who is a hoarder, a fact that few people know about her, and find it so interesting that her family, a very successful businessman husband and several now grown children can seem to have come to terms with it…
I'm not waiting for anything! But this book really sounds intriguing. Sometimes I'm amazed and saddened by what my students go through at home. Just before Christmas one of my girls told me about her 5 month old brother who was murdered by their mom 7 years ago.
Blows my mind some time!
I haven't heard of this at all.
I had never heard of that show until now, of course I don't watch television. My mother has that problem and I think I've inherited it-certainly where books and papers are concerned anyway. I'd love to read something on it in a novel but I really don't enjoy young adult fiction. I do look forward to your thoughts on it though.
This sounds like a great book to be waiting for! I've watched a few episodes of Hoarders, I find the behavior fascinating but the episodes involving pets or very young children are sometimes hard for me to watch.
I guess you could say that my grandmother was a hoarder but it was always clean so it didn't really look like it. I enjoy keeping some things but unless they're really special, if I don't have a use for them they have to go!
This does sound very disturbing though!
This sounds really interesting! My stepmom's mother had an undiagnosed form of OCD that drove her to hoard everything. Her entire apartment was filled with unused possessions, old newspapers and such. It was heartbreaking.
My hubby has a milder form of this. Why does he need two sets of golf clubs in the garage when he never plays golf? Even if they did belong to his dad … I'm just sayin'
I'd love to read these!

Thanks everyone for stopping by my Waiting on Wednesday post. It's nice to see I'm not the only one addicted to the Hoarders show.
Wendy, Hoarders is on A&E.
Linda, I can just imagine the stories you hear teaching. I'm sure some of them are heartbreaking.
Joanne, nice to see you again!
