GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of The Cradle by Patrick Somerville

April 6, 2010 by Darlene

I’ve got 3 copies of The Cradle by Patrick Somerville up for grabs courtesy of Valerie at Hachette Book Group.  I have this book and hope to read it soon.  It certainly sounds fantastic!  Take a look at what it’s about…

Early one summer morning, Matthew Bishop kisses his still-sleeping wife Marissa, gets dressed and eases his truck through Milwaukee, bound for the highway. His wife, pregnant with their first child, has asked him to find the antique cradle taken years before by her mother Caroline when she abandoned Marissa, never to contact her daughter again. Soon to be a mother herself, Marissa now dreams of nothing else but bringing her baby home to the cradle she herself slept in. His wife does not know-does not want to know-where her mother lives, but Matt has an address for Caroline’s sister near by and with any luck, he will be home in time for dinner.
Only as Matt tries to track down his wife’s mother, he discovers that Caroline, upon leaving Marissa, has led a life increasingly plagued by impulse and irrationality, a mysterious life that grows more inexplicable with each new lead Matt gains, and door he enters. As hours turn into days and Caroline’s trail takes Matt from Wisconsin to Minnesota, Illinois, and beyond in search of the cradle, Matt makes a discovery that will forever change Marissa’s life, and faces a decision that will challenge everything he has ever known.
Elegant and astonishing, Patrick Somerville tells the story of one man’s journey into the heart of marriage, parenthood, and what it means to be a family. Confirming the arrival of an exuberantly talented new writer, THE CRADLE is an uniquely imaginative debut novel that radiates with wisdom and wonder.

The Cradle sounds so good and what a great book to pick for your book club.  There’s many issues within this novel to discuss with your booking buddies concerning marriage, parenthood and family issues.  Hachette Book Group has even provided a Reading Group Guide to assist you and your book club in getting your discussion going.

This is the first I've heard of this book. I like the story line and premise. I can understand the wife's desire for the cradle. My grandson is the 6th generation of our family to use the family cradle my grandmother gave me.

  79. Kristen says

    April 20, 2010 at 2:34 pm

My grandfather made me a cradle when I was born and my parents kept it for me until I called to ask them i they could maybe get it to me by April of the following year. Ye, that was how I let them know that they were going to be grandparents. Now all three of my kids have used it and I had a replica built for my sister using my grandfather's blueprints (she used it too) when she had her first baby. So I definitely understand the pull of a cradle.

You are certainly right- this book sounds extremely interesting. The complexities of familial relationships, especially when there is a dysfunctional family, usually make us look at some of our relationships in comparison and also make us happy for the stronger relationships that we have been able to foster in our own family.

Please count me in for this giveaway. I check out the questions in the back of some books and on the internet for book groups. It makes the discussions more focussed.
