Maisie Dobbs 2011 Read-a-Long with Book Club Girl

December 22, 2010 by Darlene

I did say I wasn’t joining any challenges but a read-a-long is a different matter entirely. Jennifer over at Book Club Girl is hosting a Maisie Dobbs Read-a-Long and I’m joining in and very excited about it too!

I haven’t read any of the Maisie Dobbs books but have been interested in them for some time so this is a perfect excuse to begin the series. Here’s a bit about the first book in the series, Maisie Dobbs (from Jacqueline Winspear’s website):

Maisie Dobbs, Psychologist and Investigator, began her working life at the age of thirteen as a servant in a Belgravia mansion, only to be discovered reading in the library by her employer, Lady Rowan Compton. Fearing dismissal, Maisie is shocked when she discovers that her thirst for education is to be supported by Lady Rowan and a family friend, Dr. Maurice Blanche. But The Great War intervenes in Maisie’s plans, and soon after commencement of her studies at Girton College, Cambridge, Maisie enlists for nursing service overseas.

Years later, in 1929, having apprenticed to the renowned Maurice Blanche, a man revered for his work with Scotland Yard, Maisie sets up her own business. Her first assignment, a seemingly tedious inquiry involving a case of suspected infidelity, takes her not only on the trail of a killer, but back to the war she had tried so hard to forget.

We’re starting with Maisie Dobbs which is Book 1 and working our way to her new release in the spring of A Lesson in Secrets. The read-a-long officially kicks off on January 1, 2011. In addition to discussion, there will be contests, prizes and even the author herself will join us on Book Club Girl on Air in April to talk about all things Maisie.

Would you like to join in the fun? Check out all the details on Book Club Girl’s website and sign up while you’re there!

ooh I have never heard of this book series. It reminds a little of Mary Russell books. I hope you enjoy it.

I read the first book in this series, and while I didn't totally love it, it was pretty good and I will be interested in hearing what others hear about the series!

I haven't read any Maisie Dobbs, but I think I'll join for the first book, in any case. I can't resist the time period.
