Book Review & Giveaway: Miss Hildreth Wore Brown: Anecdotes of a Southern Belle by Olivia deBelle Byrd

April 29, 2011 by Darlene

The true pleasure of the South is brought to us in this wonderful little collection of stories called Miss Hildreth Wore Brown: Anecdotes of a Southern Belle by Olivia deBelle Byrd. Olivia deBelle Byrd is a true Southern Belle and it comes through in every word she writes. I haven’t giggled that much reading a book in a long time and it was so refreshing! I had a really hard time putting this book down at all and when I had to I went back to it at the first opportunity. I couldn’t wait to see what the next little adventure Olivia was going to take me on.

The book is made up of a great many little stories that are chock full of Southern wit and charm. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Olivia but I felt like she was a friend just from the warmth emanating from her words. You just know she’s someone you’d like! The reason she wrote the book was because her husband, listening to yet another repeated Southern story from her, asked her why she didn’t just write it all down. So she did and that’s how we’ve gotten lucky enough to experience all these sweet Southern stories!

The characters in these stories are terrific. My favorite characters though were all from Olivia’s very own family as well as her friend Isabella. They seem to have the most eventful and fun shopping trips to New York. I think though my most favorite would have to be Olivia’s husband because the way she writes about him just makes you laugh. He can’t remember names if his life depended on it and has a fit every time Olivia heads out with the credit card. One of my favorite parts that I’ll share with you comes from Olivia’s husband talking to Olivia…

“Has your credit card been stolen?” “No, I just used it five minutes ago.” “Apparently, the fraud department just called and there has been suspicious and unusual activity on your card.” “Well, I have it right here. I am afraid I am the suspicious and unusual activity.”

And best of all, from Olivia’s husband…

“I was just hoping it had been stolen,” he opined. (page 67/68)

The stories range from weddings to funerals and the proper attire for each, the importance of not sassing your elders and writing thank you notes, shopping trips (her trip to Victoria’s Secret is hilarious!) to desperately wanting to plan weddings for her children – there is something for everyone within the pages of Miss Hildreth Wore Brown. Through these pages you feel Olivia’s love for her family, her huge sense of humor, and her zest for life. It’s an entertaining and fun read for everyone and one I would definitely recommend!

Do yourself a favor and pick up the sweet and entertaining Miss Hildreth Wore Brown: Anecdotes of a Southern Belle! You can pick up your own copy here in the US and here in Canada. Be sure to pop in and visit Olivia deBelle Byrd’s website and check out what others on the blog tour thought of the book as well.
