Book Review: Jane Was Here by Sarah Kernochan

August 31, 2011 by Darlene

Jane Was Here by Sarah Kernochan is one of those books that grabs your attention and holds you until that very last page when the mystery is unfolded and laid out before you. Elements of reincarnation and suspense are also woven throughout the story which make it a fascinating read indeed.

Jane knows the people who called themselves her parents aren’t really her parents. All her life she’s lived with memories that weren’t her own – memories that landed her in an institution labelled as an autistic child. With a turn of events she manages to get released from the institution and get away from her parents. She leaves to find out who she actually is and that is where the story opens – with the girl known as Jane entering the village of Graynier. She’s been there before; she knows deep within herself that this is where she is from.
She does the only thing she can do – she shows up on the steps of the house that she feels quite sure used to be her own. Brett for his part, can’t be more surprised when he opens his door to this woman called Jane who is insisting that this was once her home and she wants to stay. The thing is Brett, for some reason, feels a connection to Jane and lets her stay and feels compelled to help her and keep her safe. As for Jane, her mission in Graynier is to find the missing pieces of her life and unlock who she really is. As Jane searches for answers as to who she is the whole village will feel the fallout as past and present collide.
I don’t want to say a lot more about the plot because then the story will be given away and I certainly don’t want to do that. What I will say is that as Jane digs into the past, the people who scorned her in the past begin to experience strange happenings and their lives begin to fall apart. The more pieces of the puzzle that Jane unlocks, the more of her memories return to her until that final memory – the memory that really starts the whole story.
I really enjoyed Jane Was Here. For me it had those kind of elements that I like – a bit of eerie, a little bit of mystery, ghostly occurrences, and the aspect of reincarnation. I will say for my readers that don’t like bad language – there is some so be forewarned. It doesn’t bother me but I know for some it’s an issue. Jane Was Here had me flipping the pages quickly as I followed Jane on her journey to find out who she really was.

I'm okay with eerie, as long as it's not hard core scary/gory, lol. This sounds interesting, like it has the gothic feel of Rebecca, a big favorite of mine.

I have been known to put down a book because of bad language, but it usually depends on how bad it is and how "necessary" to the plot! Thanks for all the info about this book!

It sounds like this one has the perfect amount of creepiness and suspense going for it, and it looks like something that I could really get into. I really loved your review, Dar, and the way you expressed yourself about the book. I will definitely be looking for this one. It sounds just different enough to be amazing!

This sounds like a book I'd like. I'm one who isn't crazy about bad language if it's really bad, but I can handle a few cuss words here and there.

I always like the reincarnation idea especially if it's done right!!
