Book Review: Call Me Irresistible by Susan Elizabeth Phillips & Giveaway (Open Int’l)

September 22, 2011 by Darlene

Call Me Irresistible by Susan Elizabeth Phillips was such a fun and enjoyable read for me! This is one of those novels that isn’t particularly deep but it is full of story if you know what I mean. You pick it up and before you know it over a hundred pages has flown by and you are still completely immersed in the story. You grow attached to the characters and you hate when you have to turn the last page and say goodbye to them all.

Meg, our main character, seems to be the screw up of her family. Her parents are extremely successful Hollywood personalities and her brothers are doing well too. Yet what do they expect? She’s been coddled and given everything all of her life. Now all of a sudden they cut her off and tell her she has to grow up and make it on her own for once. Well she’ll show them – she can do it.

First up she heads to Texas for her best friend Lucy’s wedding to the hugely popular Ted Beaudine of Wynette. Now Ted is what is called the perfect man – he’s rich, handsome, and absolutely everyone loves him. Ooops, but not Meg! Worse yet she is positive he is the wrong man for Lucy and tells her so. Now Lucy had already been having some doubts because of Ted being so perfect. How could she ever match up to his perfection?  Needless to say she didn’t need a whole lot of persuading to call of the wedding.

Meg’s name becomes mud in Wynette. There isn’t a single person who likes her or wants anything to do with her. Really though this is the least of Meg’s problems. She can’t pay her bill at the hotel because her credit card is maxed and as we know her family has cut her off. So she attempts to sneak out of town, see if she can get a job, and send the money when she can. But no, she ends up getting caught by the sherriff and none other than Ted himself. She ends up working in the hotel as a maid to pay off her bill. The thing is once she’s paid off her bill she finds that she really doesn’t want to leave Wynette. Not to mention that she and Ted clash big time and sooner or later you just know that the sparks are going to fly between the two of them!

I just loved the characters in this story. At first I thought Ted was a total jerk but as the story unfolds it becomes apparent that there is a lot more to him than first meets the eye. Meg is fantastic! She’s funny and sassy – a totally likeable character. I love how she started out this spoiled girl thinking that things should just come to her to finding her pride and building her confidence to get what she wanted. She grows up and finds herself and I always love to see a character evolve like that. Even the residents of Wynette, while some were a little mean towards Meg, they were all still great and I loved them. I would absolutely recommend this book if you’re looking for a light and fun read! I liked it so much that I went and picked up a few more of her books to read!

Sometimes a book with a great story and fun characters is just what the doctor ordered — I don’t need to read deep all the time, sometimes I just want to be entertained 🙂

I read a book by her years ago and loved it. Can’t remember the name but it had a golfer in it. Why I haven’t read any more of hers, I have no idea. Thanks for reminding me of her! Time to head to Amazon, again. Good thing I’ve still got a balance on my gift cards from retirement!
