Sunday Ramblings

October 2, 2011 by Darlene

Good Sunday morning everyone!  How is everyone’s weekend so far?  Mine has been good except for freezing to death.  Winter is definitely on it’s way here.  We’ve already had a few frosts here, the flowers are finished, and the leaves are changing color and already falling off the trees.  Is it just me or did the summer go by really fast this year?

Well I didn’t get as much reading done as I would have liked.  I just can’t seem to get back into the reading groove and I’ve noticed this has been happening way too much this year.  I wonder why though as I don’t ever remember having the reading blahs this bad before.  What I did do though is get a lot of laundry done (is there anything better than hot out of the dryer jammies?), the bed changed, and now all that is left is giving Sammy a bath today which is always such fun.  NOT!  He’s so big and strong and he spends most of his time trying to jump out of the tub and he usually succeeds.

Has anyone watched the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?  I watched it on Friday night and really liked it.  I rented Mommie Dearest too- anyone see that one?  I’ve seen it before but it’s a movie I’ve always liked and felt like watching again.  As for reading I’m finishing up Road From the West by Rosanne E. Lortz and I still have To the Moon and Back by Jill Mansell to finish up.  Geez on a normal day I can usually zip through a book or most of it.  I’m getting discouraged by my own reading.  LOL.

On tap for this week:

Monday – Review of Road From the West by Rosanne E. Lortz

Tuesday – Review of What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

Wednesday – Book Spotlight/Giveaway of Anything by Michael Baron

Thursday – Review of The Grief of Others by Leah Hager Cohen

Friday – open so far…

To end the post I’ll leave you with a couple pictures of Sammy.  You guys just wouldn’t believe how bad he is.  He’ll be doing something so cute and I’ll think about what a great picture it’ll make and turn on the camera.  Well that’s all it takes.  As soon as he hears the camera turn on he’s done being cute and either turns his head or walks away.  How am I ever going to supply you guys with cute Sammy pics if he refuses to pose.  I’ve even offered treats and only once in a blue moon will that work.  Oh yeah, I do have to share this with you – you know those storm drains that are on almost every street corner?  Well Sammy has never liked them from when I started walking him but now if he can’t walk a wide enough berth around it he will just sit down on the road and refuse to move at all so there’s me tugging on his leash and him not moving.  I have to go and pick him up and haul him off the road.  In the meantime, whoever is walking by is laughing as are the people in their houses if they’re watching.  It is kind of funny considering he isn’t scared of anything else.  It keeps making me think of the book It by Stephen King (that I’m supposed to be reading with Anna and Serena but I’m behind on that too).  Anyway maybe Sam thinks there’s something down there.  LOL.

Mom, do you really have to take a picture right now???

Mommy, it’s bedtime.  Put that camera away and quit trying to take pictures of me for your friends.  I’m tired and I want to go to sleep!

And that’s it for my week.  I hope to spend today reading and thinking up something good for supper.  What’s everyone else reading today?  Anybody do anything special this weekend?

Your weather seems to have gone right from summer to winter. We are sort of veering back and forth, with summer giving one last gasp last week, but I think it’s done now. Temps were very cool this morning when I was out at 6 a.m. and its so dark now in the morning, which I hate.

That storm drain story is hilarious, and I can certainly relate. Wags used to have a thing about the elevator; he would get in and then paw at the door until we got off; I was sure he was convinced that the door was never going to open.

Hope the reading goes better for you this week. I loved The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, although I had to break it up into two sessions, as it was a bit long for me. Mommie Dearest I liked, but saw many years ago.

Have a good Sunday Dar, and I hope Sammy doesn’t end up giving up a bath!

Beth, I don’t like the dark mornings either and it’s also getting dark so fast at night too. By 7 already we’re dark. That’s one of the big things I dislike about the winter months.

That Sammy is a character! He knows those storm drains are bad news! Fall is here this morning too. We may get a bit of Indian Summer this week which will be nice. One last hurrah before the snow flies!

Beth (bookaholicmom)- I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more Indian Summer here. The mornings are so cold here I’ve pulled out my winter coat.

Maybe Sammy knows something that you don’t! You might want to steer clear of those storm sewers; Stephen King just might be on to something!

Lisa, I’m sure Sammy is on to something with those storm sewers. lol.

Our weekend’s not so hot. Our football team lost yesterday, which wouldn’t be so bad, except that they looked AWFUL.

We had the hottest summer on record, but I still hate to see it go. We’re having fall weather this weekend.

Milou has always hated storm drains too.

      October 2, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Kathy, sorry about your team losing – that’s a bummer. LOL – I wonder what it is about those drains.

    Happy Sunday, Dar!

Our summer was brutally hot, and now it’s gorgeous and cool. I love autumn and winter; bring on the sweaters.

Sammy is too cute. I just love him!

Have you ever seen the movie titled ‘night, Mother starring Sissy Spacek and Ann Bancroft? It’s powerful and the acting is superb!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:38 pm

Beth H – I don’t mind autumn, it’s winter I’m not too fond of because it gets so cold here. I haven’t seen that movie but I’m going to look it up in a minute. Sammy is sending you some Sammy slurps!

  6. Vicki says

Today is a cool 78 degrees here and it feels so good! Maybe it’s time to say bye bye to humidity for a while. I sure hope so.

I’ve seen both The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Mommy Dearest. I thought both were very good.

Sammy is just like my Patches. As soon as she hears the camera’s lens open, she’s up to see what that noise was.

Maybe Sammy saw something in the drain once that scared him, like a rat. Patches, for some reason, does not like to be pointed at. You point at her and she’ll growl at you like crazy. It’s so funny!

    Have a great Sunday!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:39 pm

Vicki, we don’t have rats in the city here so it wouldn’t have been that. I remember once when we were walking and it was raining that he heard the water draining in it. I’m thinking it may have been that. I sure hope he outgrows it though.

Well, we have had a cool-down but I just got in from vacuuming out my car and I am SWEATING! It’s either one extreme or another. I get so antsy when it seems like I’m not reading fast enough, but then when I pick up my pace, I can’t keep up with my reviews. I’m a mess!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Sandy, you sure wouldn’t be sweating here! Yeah, there’s nothing than having a few reviews to catch up. I end up forgetting all the details I wanted to include and I’m a horrible note taker so that doesn’t help.

  8. Amy says

    October 2, 2011 at 1:49 pm

We’ve had a lot of rainy, humid weather the last 2 weeks. I just want some of that nice Autumn weather. I can’t believe you’re already getting such cold weather. It’s too soon!

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, too. It drives me nuts You’re still managing to read some amazing and not so light books. I’ve read great thinks about Jill Mansel’s books so maybe those will help you.

Mommie Dearest is a classic movie! Great pic! I liked the Benjamin Button, too. I’m glad you enjoyed them!

It’s fascinating that Sammie reacts so strongly to the sound of a camera being turned on. I wonder why he dislikes them so much.
You made me laugh out loud when you described how Sammie sits in the road and won’t budge if the storm drains are too big to walk around…it sounds like a scene from a movie.
He sure had lots of personality!

You have a great lineup for the week! I hope you have a nice Sunday, Dar and find your “reading legs” soon!

Amy, we got rain on and off today. Another one of Sam’s pet peeves. He doesn’t like to walk on the wet grass.

Oh no, you’re in a reading slump too. Not good. I thankfully managed to finish the book I need to review for tomorrow. lol.

Sam does have a lot of personality. A lady on our walk the other day called him a social butterfly because he just has to meet everyone he meets on our walks.

Linda, broken computers must be on the list for right now. Mine keeled over the other day too. I’ve got to go shopping this week for a new one. Ugggggggh!

Cute little Sammy … even if he won’t pose for you! My Romeo is now exhibiting a fear of skateboards (or rather, kids on skateboards).

You’ve got frost? Wow! We’re just gloom and rain and rain and rain and rain all day long for weeks. UGH!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Jenners, I wish Sam was scared of kids on skateboards, vehicles and bikes. He tries to chase them all and at his size he almost takes me with him.

We had rain today to go along with our gloom. Such fun. NOT!

It seems we are on the opposite schedule weather-wise! It’s hot and humid here for most of the year, and the summer heat seems to last for 8 months out of the year, where for you, it seems to be cold all the time. Want to switch houses? Sammy does indeed sound like he’s being a pill, but I know that you love him to pieces and wouldn’t want him any other way. I can also sympathize with your reading lull. I seem to be having that problem myself and am hoping to pull out of it soon. It’s so frustrating! Have a calm and relaxing week over there, my friend. Hopefully your reading mojo will come back soon!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:47 pm

Heather, I’d love to switch places for at least a little while. I don’t mind the cool but the really cold I can do without.

You’re right, I wouldn’t give Sam up for nothing even on those days where he drives me absolutely nuts.

As for the reading, sorry you’re in there with me. Maybe it’s the time of year or something. I hope it passes soon for both of us.

  12. Samantha says

    October 2, 2011 at 4:29 pm

I can just picture Sammy stopping in the start so that he doesn’t have to walk near a drain. Priceless. Don’t worry about reading…it will come in time. Maybe you should try picking up a cozy mystery or chic lit. One of those might do the trick and jump start your reading again 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful week!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Sam, you’re probably right. I have to finish Jill Mansell’s book and that’s a perfect one for pulling me out of a slump. Hope you’re week is great too.

Darlene we still have summer until today we have finally had a fall day from early am hours and it is still pleasant outside now at almost 6pm.

Sammy is doing the same as my Chihuahua, posing pretty until a camera appears and is turned on, when the beep sounds on my little Nikon digital my dog runs the other way most of the time and when he does not it is because turned it on in the other room and he did not see me until too late and a fun picture is taken.

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Jackie, my camera doesn’t even beep but it does make a noise when it opens and that’s enough. It wouldn’t work for me to turn it on in another room cause Sam chases me all over the house. lol. Even then as soon as he sees the camera itself he’s gone. I hope he outgrows it and starts letting me take pictures.

Nothing special going on here on the coast of Maine except rain, rain, and more raiin!

I haven’t been reading much, either!

We moved last week and now I’m pooped!

Those pictures of Sammy make me laugh! What a character!

    • admin says

      October 2, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Linda, we got rain today too. Doesn’t sound like you’re having the greatest weather. It must not have been nice to move in that. Hope you have a good week.

Sammy is so cute as always! Hope you all have a great week ahead, Dar!

It’s been SO cold here, too! We had a fire in the fireplace Saturday evening, but have still resisted turning on the heat. Today we went apple picking – a sure sign of fall. Sammy is adorable, as always…

I agree that there is nothing better than “hot out of the dryer jammies”!!

I’m looking forward to the spotlight of Anything by Michael baron since I liked many of his other books. Sammy may think Pennywise is down there in the storm drain!

🙂 Sammy always makes me smile.

Maybe your reading funk is all the deadlines. They tend to get to me after a while.
Love the Mommie Dearest. My mom and I always joked about this one because I had to clean the bathroom everyweek. Faye Dunaway is great and the whole movie I think is brilliantly done. I always watch it when it’s on.
Have a good week and yes the summer came and went quickly. I currently have a wool sweater on. Take care 🙂

    • admin says

      October 3, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Jen, you’re probably right about those deadlines causing some of the funk. It does sometimes get to me that things have to be read by a certain time and other times I’m fine with it. Depends on my mood.

Hi Dar. I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and cried a little. It’s a really good film. I remember Mommie Dearest, no more wire hangers!!

Awwww….Sammy is too cute 🙂 Yes, don’t go near those drains!! lol
Diego refuses to go into the basement. It’s funny the way he runs away yelping if I go down there and call him to come down.

    • admin says

      October 4, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Naida, I cried a little in Benjamin Button too. It was sad in more than a few places. As for Mommie Dearest, I can’t believe how crazy she could get.

Thank goodness Sam likes the basement since in the summer that’s the only place to be. lol

I was thinking about you yesterday and how your weather has been. We’re still terribly hot (though not as terrible as the summer). If you see any especially pretty trees please photo them for us! Hope this winter isn’t an especially bad one for you!
