Book Review: Thank You For Flying Air Zoe by Erik Atwell

July 11, 2012 by Darlene

Thank You For Flying Air Zoe by Erik Atwell is a novel about a forty-ish woman, who after a brush with death on an airplane ride home, decides that she really needs to find herself again. She needs to find what makes her happy and alive again because currently she is just coasting along. Enter Zoe Tisdale: a funny, sarcastic, and completely real woman who just wants to turn back the hands of time for a while.

Zoe is totally bored with work – selling organic butter is getting old and after that wild plane ride Zoe just thinks that there has to be more to life than how she’s living now. She thinks back to the last time she truly felt happy and comes up with when she was back in high school in the 80’s and in a rock band The Flip-Flops with her girlfriends. Their dream had been to play at the popular club Whisky-A-Go-Go. So why can’t she still have that dream? There shouldn’t be any reason that she can’t pursue it now other than the fact that it may be near impossible to convince the other girls in the band that they want the same thing.

This was a fun book that took me back in time because of all the references to the 80’s when I was in high school as well. I also liked that it was about a woman trying to get back her dream even though she’s older. How many of us still have dreams of something we wanted for our lives when we were back in high school and still had all that time in front of us. I know I do.

While I found some of the things that they did in terms of excessive drinking or partying a little out there for me I can appreciate that there are different forty year olds out there that are still interested in that type of thing. What made the book for me was Zoe. She’s a great character who had me laughing more than once with her sarcasm. Another character I liked was the socialite Ginger. She is beyond rich but pretty much everything that came out of her mouth had me laughing. This novel is chick lit from a male point of view and I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from the few things I mentioned I really enjoyed it. I love the message – its never too late in life to realize your dreams!

This sounds like a fun, summer read even though I think I too would feel the same way about the excessive partying. That is not my cup of tea either but I know many my age that go out regularly. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for this book!

I’m not sure I’ll be partying at age 40, but this sounds like a fun read.

This does sound like a fun summer read that will take me out of my doldrums right now, and I am excited to see that you loved it. I also am a big fan of the 80’s, though only certain parts of it! This was quite a lovely review today, Dar, and I am thinking that this might be the perfect read to stretch out on the beach with.
