It has been years since I’ve read a historical romance. I used to read them all the time as they were really the first books I was introduced to as a young adult since that is what my mom had in the house and I loved them. Then I veered completely away from them onto other things but this year when the opportunity came up to review a few of them I took it. I wanted to see if the old magic of these books was still there and if I could still lose myself in the pages of a good historical romance and I’m really happy to say that Highlander Most Wanted by Maya Banks was just such a book. From the beginning chapter of this book I was hooked and I loved every minute until the very last page. Yes there are some steamy romance scenes in Highlander Most Wanted but there is also a really sweet love story that melted my heart.
Genevieve McInnis has lived a life of hell for over a year. As she was on her way to meet her betrothed her escorting party was ambushed and all were killed. Genevieve was kidnapped by Ian McHugh and taken back to the McHugh Keep to be held prisoner – all because she spurned his advances at court. Ian McHugh is not a good man. He is cruel and obsessed with Genevieve to the point of violence. He holds her captive in a tower room and uses and hurts her in any number of awful ways making sure to ruin her for any other man. Genevieve despairs of every being free again and finds that the person she used to be is no longer and in her place is just a shell. In desperation she puts in motion a plan that could very well put another woman’s life in jeopardy but she sees no other way to possibly gain her freedom. If she doesn’t escape this horror that her life has become then she knows that she will not be able to survive for much longer.
When her plan brings Bowen Montgomery into her life she finds that there may be a spark of life left in her soul and heart. Much to her surprise he shows her kindness and compassion which are things she has not been shown since being home with her parents. Unfortunately for Genevieve, finally being let out of the tower doesn’t offer as much relief as it should as the McHugh clan simply despise her and are cruel any chance they get despite firm reprimands from Bowen. All Genevieve asks is that she be allowed to go to a convent and live out the rest of her days. What she doesn’t want is her family to ever find out what happened to her. They believe her dead and she feels that is best. Bowen however cannot get the lass out of his head no matter what he does. Yes he feels compassion for all she’s gone through but is it something more. Bowen has always had the lasses chasing after him but Genevieve is the first woman that he’s actually wanted to shelter and protect and … love?
I loved this story although I didn’t like the cruelness of Ian McHugh. Genevieve was a great character and from the very first paragraphs you feel compassion for her and can’t help but like the pride that she still displays despite all that has happened to her. To see her gain her freedom and learn to love life again was a highlight of the story for sure. Bowen is a man from top to bottom, obviously very handsome and rugged – very much the highland man. Yet he has a soft and caring side that is sure to capture many a woman’s heart as she reads this book. Genevieve and Bowen together was pure magic and I guess that’s ultimately what makes a romance a good one! Highlander Most Wanted is the second in The Montgomerys and Armstrongs series and needless to say I will be picking up the first one to read and will most definitely be waiting for the next one. This was a great read for me and even better I’ve found a new author to follow!
