The Crooked Branch by Jeanine Cummins: Spotlight & Giveaway (US only)

March 7, 2013 by Darlene

Today’s spotlight is on The Crooked Branch by Jeanine Cummins which just released on March 5.  This novel sounds so good and I wish there were more of me so I could read more books!  There are just too many good books out there and not enough time to read them.  Thankfully though I can at least spotlight authors and their new books for all of you.  So let’s see what The Crooked Branch is about and of course be sure to check out the giveaway at the end of the post.

About The Crooked Branch

Cummins’ brilliant new work of fiction weaves together two gripping stories of mothers separated by generations. RT Book Review gives the book four stars, praising it for the “two engrossing tales that work in concert and also stand on their own” and the “well-researched, lively prose [that] bring the two [stories] together into a bittersweet whole with a satisfying and emotional conclusion.”

In anticipation of her first child, Majella quits her job and moves back to her childhood home in Queens . But the birth is nothing like she expected, and the trauma leaves her alone with a newborn and no maternal instincts. While adjusting to her new life, Majella discovers the journal of her great-grandmother, Ginny Doyle. Curious to see how the women before her confronted motherhood, she turns to the journal for solace but discovers a confession of murder. What happened to the family during those hard years, and why does Ginny call herself a killer? Is Majella genetically fated to be a bad mother?

About Jeanine Cummins (from Jeanine’s website)

JeanineCumminsMy first book, A Rip in Heaven, A Memoir of Murder and Its Aftermath, was published in 2004, and was a surprise bestseller. Writing it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done (including giving birth twice), and I often wondered if I did the right thing, in writing it. But thousands of e-mails from comforted victims and homicide survivors have ultimately convinced me that, despite the pain involved, that book has done some good for people. The Outside Boy, published in 2010, was my first novel. And now The Crooked Branch is about to hit the shelves, and BESTSELLER LISTS EVERYWHERE. (For writers, maintaining a positive attitude and slightly distorted ego can be super-helpful!)

Must be terrible to give birth and not have the warm and fuzzzy feelings everybody talks about. Scary to think murder may run in the family.
