Going Through the Notions by Cate Price

Going Through the Notions is a fantastic start to a cozy mystery series called Deadly Notions by author Cate Price. It is cute, funny, and full of small town charm. I really enjoyed my time spent with all the quirky characters living in the village of Millbury and my visits to the Sometimes a Great Notion shop. Isn’t that a great cover as well – it was one of the first things that drew me to this delightful cozy mystery.

Daisy Buchanan used to be a school teacher but now you can find her running her shop Sometimes a Great Notion which carries all kinds of sewing notions as well as antiques and jewelry. Luckily there is a local auction every Saturday and it’s a great place for Daisy to find items for the shop. When she and her husband Joe arrive at the latest auction it is to find Daisy’s dear friend and auctioneer Angus being led away by the police. He’s been arrested for the murder of a neighbour and apparently all over a set of expensive fountain pens. Just what is going on? One thing is for sure – there is no way that Daisy believes that Angus had anything at all do with it. Of course that also means she’ll have to set about clearing his name. Needless to say that is when the real fun begins!

I really liked Daisy. She’s a spunky fifties- something gal and a go-getter who doesn’t hesitate to get herself in trying situations much to her husband’s chagrin. She’s a loyal friend and is always looking out for others. One of my favorite parts of the book was when the dog Jasper comes to stay. He’s a puppy and we all know the trouble puppies can get into. Anyhow it brought back memories of my own pup. I also enjoyed the visits to the auctions. I spent a good part of my childhood at auctions as my uncle was an auctioneer and it brought back some fond memories.

If you like your cozies to have a small town feel and a great sense of community with characters you can’t wait to see again then Going Through the Notions is one you should definitely put on your ‘to read’ list. I really enjoyed it and will be anxiously awaiting the second in the series. I hope we won’t have to wait long!
