If there was ever a 5 star read for me then Evergreen by Rebecca Rasmussen is it! I could not put this book down. When I read The Bird Sisters a few years ago and loved it I didn’t think Rebecca could possibly top that but she did! Evergreen is a beautifully written novel of secrets, betrayals, love, and ultimately hope.
In 1938 Eveline travels with her new husband Emil into the wilds of Minnesota to a place called Evergreen. Shocked by the devastation of the floods that she sees she nevertheless vows to make the best of it especially as she and Emil are to be new parents.
When their son Hux is still young Emil has to travel back to Germany to be with his ailing father leaving Eveline on her own. Trusting as she is one day she allows a government man into her home when he’s left stranded. What happens leaves Eveline pregnant with a child she doesn’t want. She gives her baby daughter up and Emil never finds out what happened that fateful day nor does Hux. However Eveline lives with the guilt and never stops wondering what happened to her baby girl.
While Hux has grown up with the love of family, his half sister has not. Namath grows up in an orphanage. Many years later when Hux is grown he learns of his sister and sets out to find her and put things right. Naamah has had a rough life though and settling into one of love and freedom, is for her, more difficult than Hux could have imagined. Hux wants to give her all she never had but first he has to convince Naamah she is worthy of it.
Evergreen was such an emotional read for me. It is so beautifully written and portrayed that it is sure to capture every reader’s heart. I loved the story, the characters, the setting – all of it! Highly, highly recommended!
