First Frost is the latest from Sarah Addison Allen who has been a favorite author of mine since I read her very first book. First Frost brings back some characters from her very first novel Garden Spells and it was great to revisit favorites who I had come to love in that very first novel. I listened to the audio of this one and it’s narrated by Susan Ericksen who I haven’t had the pleasure of listening to before. She has a pleasant voice to listen to and I thought she did a wonderful job of bringing this story to life.
First Frost takes us back into the lives of the Waverley Sisters, Claire and Sydney and the wonderful Evanelle who I adore. Back to the magic of living in Bascom and the old apple tree in the backyard that more often than not has a mind of its own especially until the first frost of the year.
It’s now ten years later and Claire is now making candy although not certain that’s what she wants to continue doing and Sydney is running her own hair salon as her special talent has to do with knowing exactly what will make a woman look beautiful although what she really longs for is a baby.
Then there are the kids and things are changing with them as well. Claire’s daughter Mariah has a special friend. Unfortunately that friend only exists to Mariah and it’s worrying Claire. Sydney’s daughter Bay is now fifteen and has a crush on a boy who doesn’t feel the same. Sydney is terrified that Bay will follow in her footsteps and have a troubled life as Sydney did.
Throw onto the pile a mysterious stranger who makes Claire very uncomfortable with all his lurking and you have the makings for another great story from this author full of all the charm and trademark magic that make all of her novels so wonderful.
Once again Sarah Addison Allen enchanted me with her tale about the Waverley’s. I do think reading Garden Spells first is a good idea so you get the back story before delving into this one. Sarah remains one of my most favorite authors and I will be anxiously awaiting her next magical novel.
You are really into the audio book these days and I’m losing traction with them. This sounds terrific!
Kathy, I know. I listen to a lot of audios. I have a bunch I’ve listened to and I’m trying to get caught up on the reviews. Its a battle. LOL.
You know, I’ve meant to read this author for practically forever and I never have. Have you listened to GARDEN SPELLS? I might need a break from my crime novel listening soon.
Kay, I read Garden Spells years ago but before I read First Frost I went back and listened to the audio of Garden Spells. It was wonderful and I bet it would make a nice break in your crime novel listening!
I loved this one too!
Nise, it was good to get back to familiar characters wasn’t it.
