The Godforsaken Daughter by Christina McKenna & Giveaway (US/Can)

April 10, 2015 by Darlene

Godforsaken-DaughterThe Godforsaken Daughter by Christina McKenna reminded me a bit of a Cinderella story but with a hint of the supernatural which really appealed to me.  It’s a novel of family drama, life, and love.   I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Sue Pitkin who really does an amazing job of telling this story.  I love when I get a narrator that I’ve never listened to but enjoy so much that I know they’ll be on my list of narrators to watch for.  I enjoyed every minute listening to her.

Ruby, thirty-three, is still grieving the loss of the father she adored.  While he was alive they spent their time working on their family farm.  With his death however she has come under the thumb of her cruel and domineering mother.  She now spends her days doing all of the household chores for her mother and two sisters.

One day while Ruby is up in the attic she discovers an old case f her grandmothers.  Inside she finds a book called The Book of Light.  This book opens up a different world to Ruby.  It’s a world where she has a voice and she finds herself speaking up against her mother and sisters who aren’t nice to her either.  Needless to say this causes Ruby’s mother to think that Ruby has gone crazy and she insists she see a psychiatrist.  It is there that Ruby will meet Jamie and while the two feel a connection, will Ruby’s mother ever allow it to flourish?

This novel is really two separate stories – Ruby’s and Henry’s, her psychiatrist.  For me though it is Ruby’s store that fully captured my interest and I wish the book would have been solely focused on it.  Ruby is a likable character.  She grabs your heart as she suffers the bad treatment from her mother and sisters.  As she begins to discover herself you can’t help but be happy for her and cheer her on.

The Godforsaken Daughter will appeal to readers who enjoy stories taking place in Ireland and those who enjoy women’s fiction.  I really enjoyed it.
