Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Jill Mansell (Audiobook)

November 6, 2013 by Darlene

miss a thing

I have been reading Jill Mansell’s books for a few years now and I adore them!  The newest from Sourcebooks is Don’t Want to Miss a Thing and yet again another from Jill Mansell to rave about.  Her novels remind me of taking my favorite sweater out of the dryer all warm and cozy and putting it on.  I know when I curl up in my favorite spot with her newest offering that I’m in for a comforting treat to the senses and once again she delivered with Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.  It was sweet, funny, and even a tiny bit sad but oh so fantastic!

Dexter is a regular ladies man.  He enjoys the single life, meeting women, and doing what he wants when he wants.  He has no intentions of getting tied down… that is until his sister passes on and he’s left to raise his eight-month-old baby niece Delphi.  Needless to say his first thought is to find a good home for her because obviously he isn’t even remotely parent material but as more and more people tell him that his niece is better off without him raising her he becomes determined to do just that.  So he gives up his high paying job and moves both he and Delphi out to a small English village and sets up house.  It’s rough going since he hasn’t much experience with babies but he’s learning and more than that he’s finding that little Delphi is stealing his heart and he’ll do anything for her.  Yet even away from the city and the parties and such Dexter still attracts the attention of women… the problem though is that it isn’t the attention of the one woman that he wants.

I was completely hooked on this book from the very first chapter.  Even though Dex was a womanizer in the beginning he has this charming quality that draws you to him and then once he starts with caring for his baby niece – well then he becomes even more attractive.  I like that he opened himself up to life and love and grew so much as a person and a man.  The other character I really liked was Molly who is an artist and lives next door to Dex and Delphi.  When Dex first makes his interest in her known she pretty much turns him down flat but as time goes on she begins to wonder if she made the right decision.  The back and forth banter kind of relationship between the two was pretty amusing.   Then there is the rest of the village full of quirky and delightful characters.  While they may not play a huge role they still fit perfectly in with the story and it wouldn’t be the same without them.  As with all of Jill’s books I found myself really caring about these characters and what would happen with them.  To me that is always a mark of a really good book.

I listened to the audiobook of Don’t Want to Miss a Thing which is narrated by Clare Corbett who has fast become a favorite narrator of mine.   She is utterly fantastic and adds so much to story just in the way she tells it.  She really does fabulous voices and I must say my favorite was her Delphi babble.  It was awesome and made me smile each and every time I heard it.  The audio version is pretty much eleven hours and it flies by so quickly that before you know it you are at the end of yet another amazing novel by a favorite author.  Don’t Want to Miss a Thing by Jill Mansell is another winner for me and one I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend of course!

The Queen of Bad Decisions & Must Love Sandwiches by Janel Gradowski

November 4, 2013 by Darlene

QueenCover-187x300

The Queen of Bad Decisions (The Bartonville Series) is a novella and it is the newest offering from author Janel Gradowski and quite an enjoyable way to spend an hour or two while curled up in your favorite chair with a yummy beverage. It’s a great short story about a woman who finally realizes that she has come to the point where her bad decisions outweigh her good ones and it’s time to make a change. Paired with foodie references and a few recipes it makes for good reading indeed!

Daisy is one of those women I think many of us can relate to. She has finally walked out on her useless no good for nothing boyfriend and is at a crossroads in her life. She knows changes need to be made but struggles with how to go about making them. One thing she knows for sure is she can’t live with her parents for long or she’ll have a home but it’ll be in the looney bin.

I really liked Daisy and she is one of those characters that I could see myself being friends with. She loves to cook, but not bake and loves to knit. Even better she gets to work in a book store. I felt a kinship of sorts with her and I think others will too. Do you think Daisy will be able to get her life on track? Well I guess you’ll have to read it and find out because I’m not giving that part away…

Must Love Sandwiches (The Bartonville Series) by Janel Gradowski comes after The Queen of Bad Decisions even though it was published before it.  I really enjoyed getting to visit again with Daisy and meet her best friend Emma.  The two live in an artist’s colony and while Daisy is still looking for love Emma has sworn off men.  Having discovered she’s more like her mother than she wants to be in terms of not being able to be alone without a man in her life she vows that she’s going to do it this time.  On their trips to the lunch trucks Daisy falls for Marshall and Emma meets Brad.  She’s determined to hold him at arms length no matter how right for her he seems.  Will these two women finally be able to find the love they so crave…

Again I enjoyed Daisy’s character.  I really like her and her no nonsense attitude.  I also liked Emma.  She seems to be vulnerable and uncertain at times because of her past and that endears her to the reader.  Most of all I like that these women and their situations seem so real.  They seem like the kind of women I could have as friends.  Again there are the craft and foodie references along with a few recipes that I always love to see in a book making Must Love Sandwiches a great read.

_________________________

Both The Queen of Bad Decisions and Must Love Sandwiches are enjoyable reads.  What I like is that they are shorter than an average novel so I can fit them in when I feel like something light.  Janel also includes some bonus stories at the end of each of these books that she describes as “truffle” length that are little bites that can be read even while you’re on a coffee break.  They include people that are mentioned in the longer books which is interesting as it develops these side characters as well.

I also feel I should  mention that while I’m a good friend of Janel’s  having met her through the blogging world about five years ago this in no way influenced my opinion of her books.  If I truly hadn’t enjoyed them I wouldn’t be reviewing them.  I’m really proud of her and I can’t wait to read more of The Bartonville series as well as anything else she ventures to write!

Check out Janel’s website for more info on her work!

A Divided Inheritance by Deborah Swift & Giveaway (International)

October 30, 2013 by Darlene

A Divided Inheritance

My first experience with Deborah Swift’s work was when I read The Gilded Lily and loved it.  Naturally I was excited to read A Divided Inheritance and once again was impressed with the storytelling ability of Deborah Swift.  A Divided Inheritance carried me away on a historical adventure to another time and place with engaging characters and vivid imagery.

The year is 1609 when we meet Elspet Leviston who lives with her father and helps him to run their successful lace business.  She enjoys the quiet time she has with her father and the discussions they have over business matters.  When her father arrives home one day with a man in tow, a man that her father claims is her cousin, she is not at all impressed.  She does not trust Zachary from the start and it isn’t long before he lives up to what she already thinks of him.  He dominates her father’s time and worse yet her father’s plan is to groom Zachary to take over the lace business one day.  Elspet had always imagined that her father would leave the business to her.  Soon enough Zachary gets himself into trouble with the law and Elspet’s father sends him off on a Grand Tour to supposedly mature him.  Things will return to normal now and Elspet will be able to talk some sense into her father… except that he passes on suddenly.  Nobody is more surprised than Elspet when the will is read and she learns things that completely shock her.  She is left with no choice other than to chase after Zachary to get back what she feels is rightfully hers.

She finally tracks him down in Spain where political and religious unrest is at a boiling point.  She finds him doing what he loves – training in fencing. Of course he wants nothing to do with her but she does manage to catch the eye of the fencing master who invites her to stay and learn to fence.  Things are in great turmoil though and it isn’t long before orders are given for the expulsion of the Spanish Muslims.  This hits both Elspet and Zachary hard as their hearts are with those that have to leave.  When things get out of hand and lives are threatened both Elspet and Zachary realize that despite their differences they are the only family either of them has and they fight for what they believe in.

Elspet is a great character and I was rooting for her all the way.  Despite the fact that she was born in a time when women didn’t have a lot of rights Elspet was still outspoken and downright tough.  Although scared she traveled to find Zachary and while there learned to fence with the men and then fought for her life.  She most definitely had guts.  Zachary is that guy that you despise but as time passes he redeems himself.  This is one of those stories that you can lose yourself in for a while as it races from one point to another and at 500 pages that is a good thing.  A Divided Inheritance is another excellent novel from Deborah Swift and well worth reading for any historical fan but will also appeal to those who love a good old adventurous tale!

Banquet of Lies by Michelle Diener & Giveaway (US only)

October 28, 2013 by Darlene

Banquet of Lies

Oh let me count the ways in which I enjoy the writing of Michelle Diener. Her newest novel Banquet of Lies was fantastic! I expected no less though after reading The Emperor’s Conspiracy this past year and loving it as well. Michelle has a way of weaving a tale that takes place during a historic time with characters and a thriller type storyline that enthralls the reader.

The year is 1812 and Giselle Barrington up to this point has had a unique and interesting life traveling all over with her father. She knows he’s involved in some type of political secrecy but he’s always kept her in he dark with it telling her that she’s safer not knowing the specifics. This changes drastically when he’s killed and Gigi is left with his secret papers and ‘the shadow man’ now chasing after her to kill her as well. These are important political papers and if only Gigi knew who they needed to go to she’d be in much less of a fix.

She is in trouble though and she falls back on something she loves to do and that ‘s cooking.  She finds out through her loyal friend Georges that there is a position for a cook at the home of Lord Aldridge and even better it is only a few houses down from Giselle’s own family home.  It’s the perfect place for her to hide as no one would suspect a society lady of being a cook in someone’s home.  She’s hired as Madame Laveel by Edgars and once Lord Aldridge samples Gigi’s masterful cooking he is all but lost.  Once he sees her in person he is lost as she is quite beautiful and he just can’t keep away the nagging feeling that he’s seen her before.  Gigi remembers him from when she was a girl and she can’t help but notice how attractive he has become.  However she’s there to cook and to see if she can’t get some snooping time in over at her home a few doors down.  She’s quite sure the shadow man has followed her – she’s seen him lurking and following her.  Yet that isn’t her only problem as Edgars begins to suspect her of something and accuses her of being a spy.  He’s set on getting her fired and will do anything to achieve that goal.  Gigi is in a world of trouble and worse yet who can she  trust?

I really enjoyed Banquet of Lies and read it in one day.  It was one of those books I just didn’t want to put down and it was gloomy outside and the perfect day to curl up with a good book.  I loved the characters in this novel even the ones who played lesser roles like Georges who I adored because of how funny he was.  Even Charlotte Raven from The Emperor’s Conspiracy makes a few appearances and she was a favorite of mine from that novel.  Gigi is a very likable character.  Shes’ a strong, independent, and a very outspoken woman who can be quite wily when she wants to be.  I think a  novel with her teaming up with Charlotte would be fantastic!  I may even have fallen a bit for Lord Aldridge while reading this book as well.  Lol.

For fans of historical fiction Banquet of Lies is the perfect pick with all its action and suspense!  Packed with great characters and an intriguing storyline Banquet of Lies will be another favorite of mine from Michelle Diener.

A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams (Audiobook)

October 24, 2013 by Darlene

summer

A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams was my bookclub’s choice for this month and I think it’s safe to say we all enjoyed it. Taking place in the early 1930’s in the oceanfront community of Seaview, Rhode Island, this is a story of love, betrayal, money, and old buried secrets – a recipe for disaster!

Lily and Budgie have been friends since they were kids. On a trip home from college with Budgie, Lily meets Nick and falls hopelessly for him and he for her. They plan to marry but everything seems set against them and things happen that only throw them apart.

Years later Lily is planning on spending a nice and relaxing summer in Seaview with her little sister Kiki. At first when she hears that Budgie and Nick are coming to spend the summer as well and that Budgie wants to renovate her old family home she is angry. And yes you read that right – it is Lily’s former best friend and former fiance that are now married. It isn’t long before Budgie manages to insinuate herself into Lily’s life again. It also isn’t long before Lily and Nick are drawn together again and when they are secrets begin to come to light that shock Lily to her core.

Oh my goodness, the webs that we weave. This novel is chock full of them. I really enjoyed it having listened to the audio which is narrated by Kathleen McInerney who does a fabulous job. I’ve listened to her a few other times and really enjoy her narration. She portrayed these characters perfectly making Budgie sound as bad as she really was and Lily meek and mild. Eleven and a half hours flew by between having a story that kept me enthralled and a narrator who did too. I recommend this one to anyone who enjoys women’s fiction. It was a great way to spend a few hours!

Christmas at the Beach (Novella) by Wendy Wax

October 23, 2013 by Darlene

christmas

Christmas at the Beach by Wendy Wax is a novella that sets up the next novel to come in her popular Ten Beach Road series. I have been hooked on this series from the beginning first reading Ten Beach Road and then Ocean Beach. I have become hopelessly entwined in the lives of all the women and it was fun to spend a little Christmas time with them!

All of the ladies: Madeline, Avery, Nicole, Deirdre, and Kyra and of course we can’t forget the sweet baby boy Dustin are spending Christmas at Bella Flora – the very first historic home they renovated. In the pages of this novella we get caught up on our favorite characters lives along with finding out where their next project will be located. There were most definitely some interesting developments and I’m curious to see what will come next.

I really enjoyed my Christmas visit with my favorite ladies and the adorable Dustin and recommend to Ten Beach Road fans for sure! At the end we are treated to a preview of the next Ten Beach Road novel entitled The House on Mermaid Point which is expected in July of 2014. I can’t wait!

Christmas at the Beach by Wendy Wax is available as an eBook at Amazon, Amazon Canada, and B&N
