Disappearance at Devil’s Rock by Paul Tremblay (Audiobook)

July 25, 2017 by Darlene

This novel was an ok read for me. I was expecting more of a horror story than it was. That being said it definitely has creepy elements more in the way of making you imagine the worst.

In this novel Elizabeth’s son Tommy disappears. There is no trace of him anywhere. Tommy’s friends were the last to see him and Elizabeth isn’t sure they are telling the whole truth of what happened that day. Meanwhile some strange things begin occurring. Elizabeth is sure she has seen the ghost of her son and pages of Tommy’s diary begin appearing. Pages that leave her more terrified than ever. As the story closes shocking revelations come to light about just what did happen that day.

I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Erin Bennett. I’ve listened to her before and always enjoy her smooth narration and what she adds to the story being told. All in all I enjoyed the book and definitely had to keep listening to find out what would happen in the end.

The Girl from the Sea by Shalini Boland (Audiobook)

July 24, 2017 by Darlene

Mia is found in unconscious on the beach. Upon waking up she has no recollection of anything. She doesn’t even recognize herself in the mirror. Her boyfriend comes and identifies her but she has no idea who he is and she finds herself not even liking him. As the days pass Mia is finding out a lot about who she is but still her memories don’t return. When they do they hit her hard. Learning how she ended up on that beach and what preceded it turns out to be quite the surprise for the reader.

I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Gemma Dawson and she does a great job. I really enjoyed listening to her and would again. A really good read or listen for those who enjoy psychological thrillers.

It Happens all the Time by Amy Hatvany (Audiobook)

July 21, 2017 by Darlene

I love the writing of Amy Hatvany. Her books never fail to leave me feeling extremely emotional and It Happens All the Time was no different.

Amber and Tyler have been friends since they were teenagers – best friends. They’ve always been there for each other through the good and the really bad times. Tyler is the one person Amber feels closest to and the person she feels she can implicitly trust.

With Amber home from college and her fiancé living elsewhere she and Tyler begin spending more time together. Amber finds herself wondering if she rushed into saying yes to marriage. These feelings all culminate one evening at a party where the friendship she and Tyler share will irrevocably change.

This is such a powerful story that highlights the issue of consent and also shares all the conflicting emotions an individual feels in a situation that is completely out of their control. In my opinion ‘no’ or ‘stop’, no matter when it’s uttered revokes consent. For those with book clubs this novel would make an excellent choice with much for discussion. Another excellent novel from Amy Hatvany!

The Lost Girls by Heather Young (Audiobook)

July 20, 2017 by Darlene

The Lost Girls is the debut novel from author Heather Young and a very good one. This is a story of long buried family secrets and one women’s wish to have the mystery of what happened the fateful day her little sister disappeared come to light.

In 1935 Emily vanishes from her family’s vacation home without a trace. The whole family is left in tatters. While Emily’s mother and two older sisters remain at the vacation home hoping for her return the father commits suicide.

Sixty years later one of the sisters who had been living alone at the lake house has passed away leaving not only the lake house but also a notebook chronicling what had happened that summer to her grandniece Justine. Being that Justine’s life is in a shambles she heads out to the lake house with her girls. There, through the journals, she learns about her family’s past but also begins to learn to take control of her own life as well.

I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Alice Rosengard and Laurel Schroeder. I really enjoyed listening to both of them as they brought this story that spanned decades together.

The Twilight Wife by A.J. Banner (Audiobook)

July 19, 2017 by Darlene

Kyra Winthrop had a diving accident that left her with little memory of anything. She experiences flashes of memories but nothing significant. Tucked away on a small island her life now consists of a few friends and her loving husband Jacob.

Kyra begins having dreams or visions. She’s not sure but then she starts thinking they must be memories and they leave her mystified … and then terrified. As Kyra uncovers more and more of her past she realizes that her life after her accident has been a lie. All her memories and discoveries culminate in a shocking conclusion.

I listened to the audio version which is narrated by the very talented Cassandra Campbell. She is in my top five of favourite narrators and I know I’m in for a great listen when I see her as the narrator. She was perfect for this story bringing that haunting, something strange is happening quality to the story. The Twilight Wife is perfect for fans of psychological thrillers.

No Longer Safe by A.J. Waines (Audiobook)

July 18, 2017 by Darlene

Alice receives an invitation from her university friend Karen inviting her for a stay in a remote cottage in Scotland. Karen had been Alice’s best friend in university – well really her only friend. Having not heard from Karen in ages Alice is excited to see her friend and her baby. Upon getting out there though Alice is disappointed to learn that two more of Karen’s university friends will be there as well.

Soon enough Alice begins to notice a marked change in her friend’s manner. She isn’t the warm person that Alice remembers. She’s cold and can be quite mean at times. The whole stay is becoming quite disturbing and even more so when someone is discovered dead.

Alice finds herself in a mess. There’s a major snow storm and Karen is making her out to be crazy and accusing her of all kinds of things. As the story winds down the ending is a twisted surprise.

I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Emma Powell who I’ve listened to before. I really enjoy her narration and she brought just the right amount of creepiness to this story. Recommended for those who enjoy psychological thrillers. I really enjoyed it.
