As readers of my blog know I love audiobooks and one of my favorite places to get mine are at Audible.com so when I was approached by them to share my Audible experience with my readers I was happy to do so. I began listening to audiobooks years ago at work and on my commute but then it was just the cumbersome CD players and all those disks that were available. Today with technology things are much more convenient and we can just pop our favorite books on our little handheld devices. It’s great for me because I’m usually on the move which means I can be listening almost all the time.
So, what is Audible.com some may ask? Well it’s a great place to get your audiobooks at fantastic prices. Quite often they have added little bonuses for members that offer up even better deals like getting two books for one credit or simply putting books on at an even better sale price. So for an audiobook addict like me it’s a wonderland. There are 150,000+ of books to browse through and you can even listen to a short sample which is great as it gives you an idea of the narrator’s voice. As an added note Audible recently revamped their website and it is really easy to navigate with your own wish list, library, and even the option to pre-order.
How does a membership work and do you need one to purchase audiobooks there? You can buy audiobooks without a membership but then you won’t be taking advantage of the great prices that the members receive. Audible.com is an Amazon company so if you already have an Amazon account then you can join with that or you can sign up for a new account. I have a platinum membership (there is also the Gold membership at $14.95/mo.) which entitles me to two audiobooks a month, 30% off on all audiobooks purchased without credits, and a free audio subscription to The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal which runs me $22.95/mo. If you’ve ever checked out the prices of audiobooks then you know that’s a good deal! Another benefit is that you can return an audiobook so if you start listening to a book and you just can’t stand the narrator and know you won’t be able to stick with it at least you know that you don’t have to and can exchange it for another one. You also have the option of cancelling your account at any time or making changes to it without any repercussions.
To become an Audible member you can try a free trial period for 30 days that comes with a free audiobook and then after that it’s just $14.95/mo. With that you will get one credit every month for an audiobook of your choice. Check out the details on the homepage of Audible.com.
Downloading an audiobook at Audible.com is so easy and for me that’s a huge plus as I also get audiobooks at my library and it’s so much more time consuming. At Audible.com I can download via my computer or wirelessly on my iPhone, iPod, or iPad with the Audible app (works for other devices as well). So with the touch of a few buttons I’m listening to my book. You can also listen to the audiobooks on your computer, burn to CD or put them on a MP3 player as well. Another thing to note is that there is now Whispersync for Voice which allows you to switch back and forth from the audiobook to the Kindle version if need be without any hassles whatsoever and you also have the option of listening to your audiobook on your Kindle if you want. Love it!
One of my favorite things about audiobooks is that they bring a book alive for me. If you have a really good narrator they can take you away on an adventure or deep into the emotions of the characters you’re reading about. That’s something you really can’t get from a book quite as much I find. Another thing I really like is that I can knit, crochet, walk, or play with the dog while listening – another thing you don’t get with paper books. A few of my favorite audiobooks that you’ve seen reviewed on my blog this year came from Audible.com and were all awesome audiobooks with great narrators:
The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
The Widows of Braxton County by Jess McConkey
The Serpent and the Pearl by Kate Quinn
The Last Camellia by Sarah Jio
From Notting Hill with Love…Actually by Ali McNamara
Audible.com is well worth your time and money if you’re an avid audiobook listener or would like to become one. My experience with Audible.com has been nothing but good and in turn I do highly recommend them and will continue to be a loyal customer.
