Publication Date: September 9, 2014
Neverland Publishing
Formats: eBook, Paperback

Genre: Mystery
Series: A Thomas O’Shea Mystery (Book Two)

Suffering from insomnia, wise-cracking tough guy Thomas O’Shea goes for a late-night stroll through the peaceful streets of Rockbluff, Iowa, and finds himself pausing downtown on the bridge that spans the Whitetail River. When he glances downstream, something catches his eye…something that looks like a body. He scrambles down to the riverbank, pulling the body of a young girl from the water. The girl is naked, with two bullet holes in the back of her head. Ever suspicious of law enforcement, O’Shea chooses not mention the bullet holes when Deputy Stephen Doltch, on routine patrol, discovers him at the river’s edge. When the coroner’s report lists the cause of death as “drowning,” Thomas goes into action.

Confronting the coroner, he is met with hostility. But then the coroner and his wife disappear, along with the body of the dead girl. Once again, Thomas gears up to find answers that will reveal who put the bullets in the girl’s head, why she was killed, and her identity, which may hit a little too close to home.

Teaming up with his friend Lunatic Mooning and Clancy Dominguez, an old buddy from his Navy SEAL days, Thomas and the other two men join together to bring justice to the dead girl, a quest that takes them to the Chalaka Reservation in Minnesota, seedy businesses adjacent to the Chalaka Casino, and straight into the world of organized crime.

A fast-paced story, laugh-out-loud moments and familiar, quirky characters from Carenen’s debut novel, Signs of Struggle, contribute once again to the complex world of Thomas O’Shea. Enter…if you dare.

Highland Hunger by Eliza Knight & Giveaway (International)

October 31, 2014 by Darlene

highlandI was first introduced to Eliza Knight’s writing when I began reading her Highlander novels and really enjoyed them.  These novels are a little escape from the day to day reality of life and I always look forward to snuggling up with the dog and indulging in one.  Highland Hunger is no exception and from the first word to the last I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent reading this book.  This book reminded me of the Hunger Games but with one sexy Highlander hunk of man to drool over and one independent and spunky woman both set on winning the war games so they can rule their Scottish land.  Very exciting!

Ceana never intended to compete in the war games but when her brother is killed she is named laird and has no choice but to go in order to protect her clan.  Macrath has been sent to the play in the war games by his stepmother who despises him as he is the bastard son of his father who is a powerful earl.  Macrath would like nothing better than to win and set his stepmother and half brother in their place once and for all.  When Ceana and Macrath set eyes on each other it is an instant attraction but Ceana knows that she has to concentrate on the games not a man.  Yet she can’t help herself especially since Macrath is set on trying to protect her.  As the games wear on the passion between the two grows and their only goal is to win the games and rule together.  Will they get through the increasingly difficult challenges and manage to not get themselves killed?  Will Macrath finally exact his revenge?  And just who is Beatrice who lords over the war games?

This was a great story with non-stop action and very steamy and sexy trysts between Ceana and Macrath.  These two make a great couple and since this is the first book in a series I can’t wait to see what will happen next when they begin to rule over their lands.   It should be very interesting!  If you love your steamy Highlander stories then Highland Hunger is a must read!  Highly recommended!

Slave and Sister by Sabra Waldfogel – Review & Giveaway (US/UK)

October 29, 2014 by Darlene

slaveSlave and Sister by Sabra Waldfogel is a sweeping saga that takes you back to the time of the Civil War. This is a story of plantations, slavery, war, love, family, survival, and the bonds we share with those we love. It is a story I loved and will not soon forget.

One is black and one is white but they share a secret and that is that they have the same father, a Jewish plantation owner. Rachel becomes Adelaide’s maid at a young age and the two bond instantly. Adelaide, defying the laws of the times, teaches Rachel how to do figures and to read and Rachel yearning to learn, lets her even though she could be beaten for it. Even when the two learn they are sisters they are still close but only in secret. In public they are maid and mistress.

When Adelaide marries Henry she takes Rachel with her to her new home. Henry, Jewish as well, has many issues with slavery. Henry realizes that to make his cotton plantation successful he needs slaves but the difference is that he believes they should be treated as he would anyone else with the respect they deserve. As Henry and Adelaide’s marriage is one of convenience and with war looming Henry and Rachel finally succumb to the love they feel for each other. Adelaide, hurt, feels anger and hatred towards her sister and it tears them apart. When Henry goes off to war and the sisters are forced together for survival they find that the bond of sisterhood is still strong within them.

This is one fantastic story. I’ve always been partial to stories of slavery and plantations and the author brings this time period vividly alive for the reader. I felt so many emotions especially anger that people had to endure what they did during the time when slavery was allowed. It truly disgusts me that a human being could be considered to be essentially nothing and could be traded or beaten on a whim.  The characters in this story are all well developed and although I didn’t live in the times of struggle that they did I still felt connected to them and all they had to go through.  It is the mark of a really good book when it touches your heart and that is what Slave and Sister did for me.

Above all this is a beautiful story of survival, hope, and love. Highly recommended!

Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester, the youngest brother of King Charles II is a handsome man with sound principles. Obsessed with Henry from afar, Contessa Griselda di Cuorenero – one of the Devil’s concubines – turns him into a vampire and plunges him into the world of night. But Henry soon discovers that not all horrors are of the paranormal kind…

In the unnaturally close village of Coffin’s Bishop, Henry encounters a severely abused young woman – a woman who has suffered under humans who are more monstrous than vampires. Could love save them from the evil they have known? And at what cost?

Henry must choose between his humanity and his monstrous, insatiable desire for human blood.

From the author of “His Last Mistress,” The Stuart Vampire is a dark gothic tale in the vein of The Monk.

The author obviously knows her Stuart and 17th Century history and facts were woven in amongst the drama of a secret darker world of evil, all happening during the time of the plague in London. The book was full of great descriptions of this time,I could almost smell it!! Baudelaire’s Revenge by Bob Van Laerhoven – Spotlight & Giveaway (US only)

October 22, 2014 by Darlene

Please join Bob Van Laerhoven as he tours with HF Virtual Book Tours for Baudelaire’s Revenge from October 6-24.

Baudelaires-Revenge

Publication Date: April 15, 2014
Pegasus Books
Formats: eBook, Hardcover
Genre: Historical Mystery/Thriller

It is 1870, and Paris is in turmoil.

As the social and political turbulence of the Franco-Prussian War roils the city, workers starve to death while aristocrats seek refuge in orgies and seances. The Parisians are trapped like rats in their beautiful city but a series of gruesome murders captures their fascination and distracts them from the realities of war. The killer leaves lines from the recently deceased Charles Baudelaire’s controversial anthology Les Fleurs du Mal on each corpse, written in the poet’s exact handwriting. Commissioner Lefevre, a lover of poetry and a veteran of the Algerian war, is on the case, and his investigation is a thrilling, intoxicating journey into the sinister side of human nature, bringing to mind the brooding and tense atmosphere of Patrick Susskind’s Perfume. Did Baudelaire rise from the grave? Did he truly die in the first place? The plot dramatically appears to extend as far as the court of the Emperor Napoleon III.

A vivid, intelligent, and intense historical crime novel that offers up some shocking revelations about sexual mores in 19th century France, this superb mystery illuminates the shadow life of one of the greatest names in poetry.

Praise for Baudelaire’s Revenge

“[An] intense historical crime thriller. The intricate plot, menacing atmosphere, and rich evocations of period Paris have undeniable power.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Vigorous. A finely-tuned balancing act between style and content. Add to all this the extremely convincingly painted tragic characters and the multitude of mysterious figures, and what you get is a winner who gives added luster to this jubilee edition of the Hercule Poirot Prize.” (The jury of the Hercule Poirot Prize)

“Van Laerhoven packs much complexity into 256 pages, giving this historical mystery the heft of a far longer work ( …) The book’s main preoccupation is the conclusive demonstration that everyone is guilty of something—the only mystery is, to what degree? The flowers of evil, sketched in lurid botanical detail…” (Kirkus Reviews)

“(A) decadent tale….Commissioner Lefèvre’s philosophical discussions with artists and poets and a creepy Belgian dwarf are fascinating….” (NY Times Book Review)

“Published for the first time in English, this roman policier isn’t so much a straight detective story (although there are two detectives in it) as an evocation of a mind-set that now seems extravagant: the 19th-century poet’s fascination with sex and death. It’s no wonder this title won the Hercule Poirot Prize: the author is Belgian, as is the prize, and the twisted plot is as complicated as Agatha Christie’s most convoluted mystery. Mystery aficionados will love this pastiche of Wilkie Collins and Edgar Allan Poe.” (Library Journal)

“(A) gritty, detail-rich historical mystery novel involves the reader in a subtle narrative web. This complex mystery from an award-winning Belgian author joins history and literary history to create a sly, smart revenge tale.” (Shelf Awareness Pro)

About the Author

Bob-Van-Laerhoven-2Bob Van Laerhoven became a full-time author in 1991 and has written more than thirty books in Holland and Belgium. The context of his stories isn’t invented behind his desk, rather it is rooted in personal experience. As a freelance travel writer, for example, he explored conflicts and trouble-spots across the globe from the early 1990s to 2005. Echoes of his experiences on the road also trickle through in his novels. Somalia, Liberia, Sudan, Gaza, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar… to name but a few.

During the Bosnian war, Van Laerhoven spent part of 1992 in the besieged city of Sarajevo. Three years later he was working for MSF – Doctors without frontiers – in the Bosnian city of Tuzla during the NATO bombings. At that moment the refugees arrived from the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica. Van Laerhoven was the first writer from the Low Countries to be given the chance to speak to the refugees. His conversations resulted in a travel book: Srebrenica. Getuigen van massamoord – Srebrenica. Testimony to a Mass Murder. The book denounces the rape and torture of the Muslim population of this Bosnian-Serbian enclave and is based on first-hand testimonies. He also concludes that mass murders took place, an idea that was questioned at the time but later proven accurate.

All these experiences contribute to Bob Van Laerhoven’s rich and commendable oeuvre, an oeuvre that typifies him as the versatile author of novels, travel stories, books for young adults, theatre pieces, biographies, poetry, non-fiction, letters, columns, articles… He is also a prize-winning author: in 2007 he won the Hercule Poirot Prize for best thriller of the year with his novel De Wraak van Baudelaire – Baudelaire’s Revenge.

In 1688, torn by rebellions, England lives under the threat of a Dutch invasion. Redheaded Calumny Spinks is the lowliest man in an Essex backwater: half-French and still unapprenticed at seventeen, yet he dreams of wealth and title.

When his father’s violent past resurfaces, Calumny’s desperation leads him to flee to London and become a coffee racketeer. Cal’s journey takes him from the tough life of Huguenot silk weavers to the vicious intrigues at Court. As the illicit trader Benjamin de Corvis and his controlling daughter Emilia pull him into their plots, and his lover Violet Fintry is threatened by impending war, Cal is forced to choose between his conscience and his dream of becoming Mister Calumny Spinks.

Praise for The Bitter Trade

“A fantastic debut novel” – Robert Elms, BBC Radio London

“The ambitious, cheeky Calumny Spinks is a great guide through the sensory overload of 17th century London, in an adventure that combines unexpected insights with just the right amount of rollicking ribaldry. I hope it’s the opener to a series.” – Christopher Fowler, author of the Bryant and May novels

“This debut novel is a gripping evocation of late seventeenth century London, rich in persuasive dialect and period detail and with a bold protagonist. An unusual thriller that just keeps you wanting to know more about the many facets of this story. You’ll never view your coffee in quite the same way again.” – Daniel Pembrey, bestselling author of The Candidate

“A very exciting and superbly researched novel” – Mel Ulm, The Reading Life
