Sunday Ramblings & Sammy is Back!

February 5, 2012 by Darlene

Yahoo!  It’s Sunday and I have prime spot right up here at the top just where I like to be!  Hi everyone!  I know you all come to see me.  Mommy thinks it’s because of her but I know better – who could resist all this cuteness?

Happy Sunday everybody!  How is the weekend going for everyone?  It’s been a beautiful one here weather wise.  It’s warm (for us) and sunny.  We really have been lucky this winter and I’m just hoping it lasts till spring.  It’s been really great for walking Sam and just generally a lot easier on the mood.  I haven’t really gotten much done this weekend, not even reading.  Well I did pretty much get my laundry done though and a little crocheting.  I’ve found crocheting is much easier on my hands so I’m going to do it for a while.  When I finally get anything accomplished I’ll post a picture.

As for reading I guess I’m doing ok but I really haven’t felt all that motivated to read this weekend.  I’m just starting Far from Here by Nicole Baart for review this week and it’s good so far.  I’ve got so many good books to read and I keep looking at them all and wishing I could get them all read.  Anyhow, up for this week is:

Monday – An audiobook giveaway of Home Front by Kristin Hannah
Tuesday – Review of Far from Here by Nicole Baart
Wednesday – a guest post & giveaway from Christine Blevins, author of The Turning of Anne Merrick
Thursday – Review of This Beautiful Life by Helen Schulman ( I hope-my review copy hasn’t arrived yet)
Friday – Book Spotlight & giveaway of Diary of a Mad Fat Girl by Stephanie McAfee
Saturday – Book Spotlight & giveaway of Dating the Undead by Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe
Sunday – a Valentine’s recipe and giveaway of Before She Dies by Mary Burton (sorry no Sammy this week and he’s none too happy about it either)

So, quite a busy week.  Actually it’s a busy month.  Every day is booked clear to the end of the month and into March.  I think I must be crazy sometimes to keep up this pace.  I wonder if you can get blog burnout.  lol.

Well, on to Sammy.  I’m trying to remember if he’s done anything especially crazy this week but nothing is coming to me.  One funny thing he did though I will tell you about.  The other day I finished feeding him and took him outside.  I went to plug in our outside lights and I look over at him and there’s this black thing that it looks like he’s trying to bury.  Of course I freak out thinking maybe he’s gotten a mouse or it’s a dead bird – anyway I’m mildly freaking out either way.  So I run over there at full tilt in the snow to find that my angelic Sammy has brought one of his sockies outside and is determined to bury it in the snow.  It was hilarious!

Sammy was also lucky enough to get his hair done this past week.  I wish I had gotten his face trimmed more and I will next time because with all this burying of socks his whiskers never stay very nice.  So I’m going to leave you with a few pictures of my Sammy Bear and I hope you all enjoy them…

Yes I had a haircut.  Yup, you’re right I was none too thrilled about it either.  They stuff me in this cage there so I bark the whole time.  The only thing is they are way better at ignoring me than my mommy is.

So, since I’m still a little ticked off with mommy for leaving me at the groomers I figure I should drive her extra crazy for a while.  Every time she sits down I pull at her socks and just for extra fun I nip at her toes too.  Serves her right!

Ok, even I have to admit I’m gorgeous!

That’s all for this week.  Be sure to let me know what you’re up to today and if anything exciting is going on in your world.  Oh, and what you’re reading.  I want to know if anyone is reading or listening to anything extra good.  For now, Sammy is sending out Sammy slurps to all his fans (especially Beth H).  Have a great week everyone!

Sunday Ramblings, Challenges, and Sammy!

January 8, 2012 by Darlene

Happy Sunday!  What’s everyone up to today?  Or this weekend for that matter – did anyone do anything extra special?  My weekend has been quiet.  I’ve got the winter blues I think so I’ve really been keeping to myself.  Not usually the best thing to do but it’s what I’ve always done.  That being said we are having an unusually warm winter here.  We have pretty much no snow left but what we do have is lots of ice because instead of snow we’ve been getting rain which isn’t a good thing here because the temperatures are cold enough that it comes down as freezing rain and makes a skating rink of things.  It has been raining on and off here for weeks and unfortunately it doesn’t get quite warm enough to melt.  Our backyard is a skating rink and I feel so bad for Sam as he slides all over.  I have those little grippy things on my boots so I hold on pretty good but it’s still hard walking in them.  But I’m not complaining.  I’d take this warm weather over our normally freezing and snowy temps any day!

As for reading I’m doing ok I guess.  I’ve read some good ones lately.  I posted a review for The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian on Book Trib (my review if you’d like to see it) the other day.  Boy that was a good book!  I’ll be posting it next month here on the blog as well.  I’m going to be starting All the Flowers in Shanghai by Duncan Jepson this week and I’m looking forward to it.  I’ve also been reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin as well and I’m really liking it.  Has anyone read either on of these?  What did you think of them if you did?  This year I hope to read a lot more of my own books than I have been.  I’m still going to participate in tours but my own books are going to be a priority as well.

As for challenges I’m joining in only a few and I’m going to make it a point to succeed at them this year.  I didn’t complete any of the goals I set for myself last year but I’m giving myself some leeway on that.  After losing Buddy I was crazy to set any goals for myself in the first place.  I think this year should go better in that department.  The ones I’m going to do this year are as follows…

The first one is the War Through the Generations which for 2012 is going to be focused on World War I and it will run from January 1 – December 31, 2012 and is being hosted by my bloggy friends Serena from Savvy Verse & Wit and Anna from Diary of an Eccentric.  I’ve picked out a few books that I’d like to read but I can’t remember the names of them right now for the life of me. You can sign up here and get all the info for the challenge if you’d like to join in. Oh there is going to be a read-a-long this year for the book A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemmingway and I will be joining in for that so that’s one of my books.  Oh geez, I’m getting bad at this but never mind  – there are various levels you can join at as well but I’m going in for a Dip which is to read 1-3 books.  I should be able to handle that.  lol.

The second challenge I’m joining in for is over at another bloggy friend’s which is Naida of The Bookworm and it is the Romance Reading Challenge.  Yes I know you’re all thinking that I’m always saying I don’t like romances and I don’t for the most part but Naida is very lenient with her challenges (which I really like) and as long as you’re reading a book where there is a romantic love between your main characters, it qualifies.  Well even I read books like that.  One book that I will be reading for sure for this challenge will be Gone With the Wind.  I’ve been saying I’m going to reread it every year and this year I am.  I’m hoping that Naida and I will read it together and maybe we’ll be lucky enough to have others join us.  You have to choose at least 5 books for this challenge.  Now I’m not choosing my books right now other than Gone With the Wind because I’m sure that as I go along a lot of my books will fit into this challenge. Now if you’d like more information or to join in on this challenge just head over to this post and you’ll find everything you need.

So only a couple of challenges.  I may join another one or two yet but I haven’t decided for sure.  These two I know I want to do.  I’m not going to do challenges like 100+ books, ARC’s, or eBooks like I have previously because I keep track of those anyhow.

Now I’m going to leave you with a few pics of Sam.  I got a new camera for Christmas but I have to get my computer fixed before I can download them so these are still from my old camera but Sammy is cute no matter which camera I use.  Anyhow he’s doing well.  He had his shots this past week though and got sick on me.  He was throwing up and scared the crap out  of me.  I phoned the vet and he determined that Sammy was likely just not feeling well from the shot and wasn’t having a reaction because it was quite a few hours later.  Anyhow he calmed me down – have I ever mentioned I have an awesome vet.  Well I do – he’s been very good to me in these past 10 years that I’ve known him.  You don’t find too many doctors that will give you their home number these days and be patient with you while you’re freaking out over things because you’re still much too anxious over losing Buddy.  He’s been very understanding and he’s a very gentle man and Sammy likes him which is all that matters.  Anyhow Sammy was fine the next day thankfully and doesn’t seem any worse for the wear now.

I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead and get lots of reading done!  I sure hope to.  Here’s Sammy to send you off…

I just love those green stringies mommy left for me to chew.  I like to pull the chair across the floor once in a while too.

Here I am sitting like the King that I am.  Mommy said we couldn’t put the whole picture for you cause the house was messy.  I’m not very concerned with things being messy cause I make most of it anyway.

Some Sunday Ramblings & Some Winners

December 11, 2011 by Darlene

Hi everyone.  Happy Sunday and Sammy slurps to you all!  Congrats to you all on winning your books this weekend.  I’m off to get into some trouble now with this oven mitt.

Happy Sunday everyone!  What has everyone been up to this weekend?  Is anyone all done with their Christmas decorating and shopping?  Well I’m not.  Not even close.  For all my big talk my tree still isn’t up and I’m not done shopping.  Anyhow, the box with the tree is out so I think the tree may actually go up today.  Wish me luck!  I’m sure Sammy is going to be more than interested in what we’ll be doing.  Which reminds me we decided to put the tree up on the table yet this year.  I don’t trust Sam not to eat the decorations or grab a piece of the garland and pull it like he does with my socks.  LOL.

Not much going on with my reading.  I’m getting by but I’m glad I didn’t book much for December because with battling the flu and other things I’m not keeping up.  Plus I’m still so tired at night.  Before I can even think of settling in with my book I’m already falling asleep.  It’s too bad I can’t stay sleeping though.  Maybe I should just get up at 3am and do my reading since I’m awake anyhow.  So for today the plan is to take Sam for one of his walks, get him fed, hopefully get some decorating done, and then I want to read.  At least for a while.  Ooooh, I also have to get a package ready to go out which, of course, I don’t have ready.  Sorry to the person it’s going to and they know who they are.  lol.

Ok, now for some winners this weekend…

The Chapters Indigo e-Giftcard — Melissa at Confessions of an Avid Reader

Beyond All Measure by Dorothy Love — Nancye Davis

Southern Fried Women by Pamela King Cable — Carol Wong

Fool’s Mate by Laura Pedersen — Jessica (frellathon)

So Far Away by Christine W. Hartmann — Anne

Running Away to Home by Jennifer Wilson — Bree, Kitty, and BEth

Congrats to you all!   I hope you’ll all enjoy your wins.  Well that’s all for me.  I hope to be back next week with some pictures of Sammy for you.  Have a great day everyone!

Sunday Ramblings & Sammy Pics

November 20, 2011 by Darlene

Good morning everyone.  I hope you’re all having a great weekend. Has anyone done anything special or fun this weekend?  Here in Alberta it was much too cold to do anything but stay inside unless you’re a die hard winter fan which I’m not!  We had a winter storm this past week and got a dump of snow but it’s really the cold winds that are the worst.  With the windchill it’s about 20 below in Fahrenheit – very cold.  Worse yet is that Sammy still seems to love it out there even though it’s so cold.  I’ve been putting his boots on – it’s just too cold without them.  I let him out once without them and he was lifting his paws within a minute or two.  It’s a battle to get those boots on though.  I’ll have to get a picture of him this winter all dressed up for you guys.  I didn’t this week but I will.

I haven’t been doing too well with my reading.  I just can’t seem to motivate myself to read.  I’m really tired though so that could be it.  This cold weather really does take my steam right along with it.  Normally I like to read in bed early in the evening and into the night once I get Sammy to sleep but lately I’ve been falling asleep with him.  Luckily after tomorrow it is supposed to be warming up – thank God!

What’s up for the blog this week.  Well let’s take a look…

Monday – Review of So Far Away by Christine W. Hartmann
Tuesday – Book Spotlight/Giveaway of Running Away to Home by Jennifer Wilson
Wednesday – Still up in the air
Thursday – Guest Post/Giveaway with Melissa Foster, author of Come Back to Me
Friday – Still kind of up in the air – depends on how much I feel like reading
Saturday – Book Spotlight/Giveaway of Narrow’s Gate by Jim Fusilli

Now for Sammy.  Did I tell you guys that he still wants to go for a walk in this crappy weather.  Needless to say we are not going far because his mommy has a really hard time breathing when it gets this cold.  So we bundle up – him in his booties and coat and me in so many clothes and scarves that you can barely find me.  I just take him a short way down the block and up our alley and he seems happy enough with that.  It’ll be nice for him when it warms up though and we can go a bit further.  He hasn’t really done anything terribly bad this week – surprise, surprise and other than the battle we have putting his booties on he’s been good.  His tummy is a bit off this week so maybe that’s why he’s actually been fairly good.  Hopefully this week will be a better week for him.  Anyhow I only have a few pictures of him to share with you this week.  I’ll try to get more for next weekend.

Oh where or where can I hide my sockie this time???  By the way mommy wants me to mention that I cry the whole time I’m trying to bury my sock.  I don’t know why that’s important since all she does is laugh at me but she wanted you all to know.

Ok, I need something else to do now mommy or I’m going to have to find something on my own and you know what happens when I do that – you start yipping at me and chasing me around the house to get whatever it is out of my lips.  It’s really no fun for me since obviously it’s something I’d like to chew up.

Maybe I’ll relax a bit although if she keeps up with that camera I’m going to get up and find something to get in trouble with.  Mommy says I have a bit of a mischievous look in my eye and she’s probably right.  I do spend my days looking for things to chew or destroy.  It’s a pretty good pastime in my doggie world.

Well that’s it for me.  I’m going to spend the day trying to read and not freeze.  Hopefully I’ll finish up my laundry and get the bed changed as well.  I still have my summer clothes to put away and pull out any of the winter stuff that still fits.  After losing almost 47 pounds I can tell you that nothing fits me anymore and I never did pop into the store to buy some warmer stuff.  I’m not a fan of shopping for clothes but I’m going to have to at least get some pants.  It doesn’t matter if sweaters are too big but your pants falling off isn’t really a good thing.

I hope everyone has a great week.  I did an awful job of visiting your blogs this week.  My motivation for that is nil as well but I’m going to try to get my butt in gear this week.  I miss everyone and knowing what’s going on in your lives so if anything important has happened please let me know.  With it warming up again my hands should feel better and I can get my commenting fingers going I hope.  Take care everyone!

Sunday Ramblings, First Snow, and Sammy!

November 13, 2011 by Darlene

Happy Sunday everyone!  I hope you’ve all been having a great weekend.  We have finally gotten our first snowfall although it’s not too much at all.  Just an inch or so but enough to make the roads pretty slikkery and awful.  At least we didn’t get a huge dump of it like others have had.  It’s coming though.  It’s only a matter of time when you live on the Prairies before the snow shows up and usually lots of it.  I’m pretty sure you can click on all of the pictures for larger views if you’d like.

This is my favorite view out my front door when it snows.  I like the way the snow sits on the trees so you’ll probably see this picture with varying degrees of snow throughout the winter.

All those tracks through the front lawn are courtesy of Sammy who went crazy dragging me along behind him when we came home from our walk.

This is one of Sammy’s most favorite places to walk.  He loves to walk along the fence smelling all those good dog smells.  It’s not his mommy’s favorite place though because the wind coming off that playground in the winter is verrrrrrrrry cold!

I’ve got the urge to start putting up some Christmas decorations.  I know it’s early but as soon as it gets colder and then when the snow starts it just makes me think that it’s time to see Christmasy stuff.  The only problem is digging it all out of storage and going through it again.  I used to always put up a tree in my bedroom but didn’t last year.  I think I’m going to put it up again this year and see what Sammy thinks of the pretty lights.  We don’t do much for gifts anymore but I’m going to pick up a few things.  I’m knitting my mom some dishcloths but it’s slow going with my sore hands.  I’ll keep plugging away though as it’s good exercise for my sore joints and I do have a month and a half to go so I should be able to get quite a few made.  For Sammy, I’m just going to buy a package of socks and I’m sure he’ll be more than happy.  lol.

Oh, something else I have to share with you is some bookmarks I bought from the lovely Sherri of Sherri’s Jubilee.  She has a wonderful Etsy site where she sells her very pretty ribbon bookmarks, some jewellery, and other creative goodies that she makes.  Anyhow, I bought quite a few – some for me (most for me), but a few as Christmas gifts as well.  I’m a little weird with my bookmarks; I like them to match the book I’m reading in some way whether it be color or picture.  So, of course that means that one or two is not enough and that meant I needed to get more.  Here are a few pictures of some of my favorites.  Aren’t they gorgeous!

I just love these.  All of them!

On the reading front I have been doing ok but not great.  I’ve got a few books on the go right now.  I’m just finishing up Her Sister’s Shadow by Katharine Britton and then I’ll be starting Beyond All Measure by Dorothy Love.  In addition to that I’m also working on Song of the Nile by Stephanie Dray, The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, and last but not least Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys (that I received from the lovely Sandy at You’ve Gotta Read This – thank you so much Sandy!).  Yup, lots on the go.  Now let’s see how much I actually manage to get done in the next few weeks.  There always seems to be something else to do and getting to sit down and read for any length of time anymore just doesn’t seem to happen for me.  The blog is pretty busy for the week though.  Here’s what will be happening…

Monday – Review of Her Sister’s Shadow by Katharine Britton
Tuesday – Review of To the Moon and Back by Jill Mansell
Wednesday – Beyond All Measure by Dorothy Love
Thursday – Book Spotlight/Giveaway of Southern Fried Woman by Pamela King Cable
Friday – Review/Giveaway of Come Back to Me by Melissa Foster
Saturday – Book Spotlight/Giveaway of Fool’s Mate by Laura Pedersen

As you can see, a very busy week.  I only hope I can keep up to my own blog.  The whole of November has been really busy.  It slows down a bit for December but who knows, it may book up yet.

Now for Sammy Bear.  He’s his usual rambunctious self and causing trouble at every turn.  As you probably already know he is the only one of us happy with the snow.  He just loves it as you’ll see from the pictures below.  It’s also the first anniversary of me bringing him home.  Last year on November 13 he came home with me.  It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year and it’s certainly gone by really fast.  I love him dearly and feel blessed that although God closed one door with taking Buddy who I miss so much, he opened another with Sammy and brought another loving and beautiful pup into my life.  Enjoy the pictures; there’s a few this week with the snow and all!

Mommy – snow!!!  Yahooooooooooo!

Snow, snow, and more snow!  Look at me go crazy.  You can barely see me I’m moving so fast.  Oh boy, I like this stuff!

Here I go again!  Funny though mommy is just standing in one spot watching me tear around.  Hmmmm, she couldn’t keep up anyway.  I’m just a streak through the snow.

Let’s see what I can find to put in my mouth and run around with.  There must be some kind of grass or something still here.  Mommy put up this fence because I like to go run around the garden and be bad in there.  Plus she yatters on about me getting hurt all the time because I’m going so fast.  Minutes after mommy took this picture though I stuck my paw into one of the bigger gaps and I think I may just fit through there.  I’m gonna try it next time we’re out and the best thing is it’s going to be really hard for her to come in after me.  Yahooooooooooo!

Yaaaaay!  My first walk in the snow.  Let’s go mommy!  Hurry!  There is no time to waste here – dogs have a lot to sniff and play in when it snows and you know how I love the snow mommy.  I know mommy isn’t happy with the snow but I sure am!

Well that’s it for me this week.  Sorry for such a long post – I hope you all made it to the end.  lol.  What’s everyone else up to this weekend?  Did you do anything interesting or just relax with a book?  Is anyone else excited to start decorating for Christmas yet?  If Sam lets me I’m going to relax with a cup of coffee and a book.  I’d like to have at least one relaxing day out of the weekend since Sam kept me on my toes running around after him yesterday.  That pup of mine has more energy than even he knows what to do with.  Have a great week everybody and I hope you’ll join me here this week for all that I have planned.  I’ve been a horrible commenter these past weeks and I’m going to make a huge effort to get out to visit you all this week!

Sunday Ramblings & Fall & Sammy Pictures

October 16, 2011 by Darlene

Welcome to Fall here in Canada.  The above picture is of a park by my house that Sam and I walk by every day.  This was taken on a bit of a cloudy day and then I forgot the camera after that to take a better one.  It still looks really nice with the leaves turning and the bench just sitting there and waiting for someone to sit down with a book.  I might mention though that it is unlikely that anyone will be sitting and reading a book outside anywhere right now.  It has turned quite cold here although on the plus side there is no snow yet so that’s good.  When you have winter six months of the year, the later the snow comes, the better.  The leaves are now falling quite a bit, the grass is yellowish, and there is a definite feel of wintery bluster in the air.  This next picture is the tree out in my front yard.  I love the colors this tree turns.  We have the exact same tree in the backyard and yet it doesn’t seem to turn colors like this one.  These fall pics are for everyone’s enjoyment but especially Trish who wanted to see some of the fall colors here.

Aside from freezing and trying to get used to it not much else has been going on.  As I said yesterday I seemed to have picked up a stomach bug and I’m still not feeling the best.  I did get some reading done, although not as much as I would have liked to.  I’m reading Goddess of Vengeance by Jackie Collins right now and I’m supposed to have a review up tomorrow but I may have to move it to Tuesday.  It depends how much reading I get done with a headache.  I used to love Jackie’s books and it’s kind of fun to get back into one as it’s quite different from what I normally read now.  On another note my dad was in a car accident yesterday.  He’s fine but sore as he got rear ended and then he hit the car in front of him.  Those of you who pray I’d appreciate a prayer for him to feel better soon.

Here’s the happenings this week on the blog…

Monday – Review of Goddess of Vengeance by Jackie Collins (I hope – maybe Tuesday)
Tuesday – Book Trailer of my friend, author Millenia Black’s book, The Great Pretender
Wednesday – Waiting on Wednesday Post
Thursday – Review of Summer in the South by Cathy Holton
Friday – Review of Space by Emily Sue Harvey

Another fun-filled week at Peeking Between the Pages.  I had mentioned yesterday that I am reviewing now for The Book Trib’s Review Crew and I have a few reviews posted there now.  You can see my page here if you’d like.  The reviews I post there I will re-post about a month later here on my blog.

Now for Sammy – what is a Sunday morning or afternoon without Sam right!  He hasn’t done anything this week other than chew a chunk out of the basement stairs.  I was sorting laundry and wondering why he was so quiet.  I should have known he was up to no good.  I come around the corner and there he is gnawing on the corner of the stair.  I yell and he just looks up at me all innocent like as if to say ‘What mommy, what did I do now?’  LOL.  Here’s a few pictures for your enjoyment of my baby boy…

Really mommy.  That gosh darned camera again!

How is a puppy to get his beauty sleep with all that flashing going on mommy???

Isn’t he just adorable!  So what is everyone doing today?  Did you go anywhere or buy anything exciting?  I need to live vicariously through you guys today since I haven’t been too motivated myself.  What are you all reading?  It can’t hurt to add more to my already huge wishlist.  Whatever you’re all doing I hope you’re at least enjoying some time with family, friends, or a good book!
