Pieces of My Sister’s Life by Elizabeth Joy Arnold

May 7, 2008 by Darlene

This book was picked by Jenn from my PT book club and it so well worth reading. This book is about two sisters, twins, and their journey through life. At a very young age their mother leaves them and this is something they struggle with their whole lives. I think in a lot of ways it played a huge part in how their lives unfolded. When they are seventeen, something huge happens to them and their lives are changed forever. Thirteen years later, something big happens once again and ends up being a life changing experience for them. This novel goes back and forth from the past to the present but not in a confusing way. As a reader I became very involved in these girl’s lives, feeling as though I could feel their joys, hurts and disappointments, and struggles. The book keeps you wondering about the truth of the story as it shifts back and forth and really keeps your interest by doing that. I had this book finished in about a day and a half I think-I just wanted to keep picking it up to see what was going to happen next. I was surprised in parts, shocked at some others. Ultimately this book made me cry my eyes out but that’s ok-doesn’t make it a bad story for doing that. This was a really good novel, one I will place on my shelf to be kept, passed on to a friend or maybe re-read someday.

As a note there was one quote I want to keep in my memory-it just sounded beautiful and nice to me: “Everyone you ever love, anyone who ever loves you, lay a light like a canopy on your soul”.

Great pic Jenn!

Charley’s Web by Joy Fielding

May 3, 2008 by Darlene

Another good read from Joy Fielding. The story follows Charley who writes a pretty controversial column for a newspaper. So controversial in fact that she gets scathing emails on a regular basis. She ends up being contacted by a convicted murderer, Jill, to write ‘her side of the story’. So Charley meets her, agrees to write her story, secures a book deal, and from there things begin to unravel for Charley. I like that the novel had some mystery and suspense and kept me reading. The only thing I found that dragged along was some of Charley’s conversations with Jill the murderer. However, the story does take some interesting twists and turns and keeps you wondering to the end. I have to say I didn’t enjoy this novel as much as some of her others but still it was a good read.

The yada yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson

May 2, 2008 by Darlene

This was such a wonderful book and I am so looking forward to the next six books in the series. The characters in this book just grab onto you and hold on. I already feel as though I personally know and love them. This novel is about a group of women who meet at a Women’s Conference and end up sticking together. They initially form an email group which quickly evolves into a deeper friendship and the women actually meeting regularly. Tragedy strikes in many different ways in this book but the women pray together and are there for each other. I was brought to tears and laughter in this novel. I think the novel struck so deep within me because I have a wonderful family of PT sisters. We met online and started as a book club about 5 years ago and have grown to be family and love and care deeply for each other. I know if we were living near each other that we would be there in good and bad times for each other as the ladies in yada yada are. Again, I really look forward to reading more in this series.

Flawless: A Pretty Little Liars Novel by Sara Shepard

May 2, 2008 by Darlene

This is the second book in the series and I enjoyed it. The girls are a year older and still struggling with being young and getting by. Some of the mystery has been revealed but we still have no idea who is harassing the girls. They thought they knew who it was but it turns out they were wrong. The novel again ends with them being texted by whoever this mystery “A” person is and again the book tackles some of the issues facing young people. I’m curious to read the next one in the series and see if the girls come together as best friends again and manage to find out who is tormenting them. I’m anxious to find out what happens to them next as they are a bit messed up at the end of this book. For a young adult book, it’s quite good. It’s a fast and easy read.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

April 25, 2008 by Darlene

This is another YA novel and I had tried reading it once before and didn’t stick with it. Jenn, one of my PT sisters read it and really liked it so I gave it another go and I’m glad I did. I really enjoyed it and I’m looking foward to reading New Moon next. The novel is all about Bella meeting Edward who just happens to be a vampire. She finds out what he is but doesn’t care andn is hopelessly in love with him and he her. He worries for her safety all the time and is scared he could really hurt her. None of this matters to her-she just wants Edward. I really like the characters, especially Bella who is clumsy and quite funny-you just can’t help but like her. I found the book a bit slow off the beginning but then it picks up and by the end you are hooked on the story and looking for more.

The Kindness of Strangers by Katrina Kittle

April 25, 2008 by Darlene

This novel is described as being a heart rending story and it most certainly is. I haven’t even got words to convey all the emotions I felt reading this book. On the back cover it tells us that the dark and disturbing subject matter of this book will raise eyebrows and it does. At the same time, it makes us more aware of what may be going on around us in people or families who seem perfectly normal on the outside. People we felt sure we knew and even cared about. Things are not always as they seem. This novel takes us through a young boy’s struggles with wha’ts happened to him and his journey towards healing. It also brings us close to the struggles of the family helping him who have no idea how to deal with the situation but do their best. This book touched me on so many levels. The subject material horrified me yet as this story goes on and you see the strength and love of the people involved and the will of this boy to survive-you see that healing can take place even in the worst of circumstances and it gives you hope. The novel gives us insights into a world we’d rather ignore and pretend doesn’t exist and for this I think it’s a great story to bring about more awareness to people. Maybe from reading some of the things portrayed in this novel, another child somewhere can be saved. I hope so. I would highly recommend this novel.
